I've explained a million times that the deal is good value for Winnipeg. The Jets team is better with Hamilton, Fleury, and Dzingel than they are with Connor and Pionk, period. This is a plan B in case we can't get Hamilton signed. He is, IMO, the single best defenseman in the game right now.

No, not at all. Dougie is far and away the best player in the deal. Fleury and Dzingel are both better than Samberg right now. Samberg isn't even an NHL player. He could be very good, or he could be a flame-out. You don't know. That's the risk that you take with prospects.

Winnipeg is giving up a point per game 45+ goal scorer along with a top 4 defenseman for a small upgrade on defense (who has an expiring contract) and a 3rd liner and a bottom pairing defenseman.
Easy no from WInnipeg

We're not dealing Hamilton unless an extension is in place with the other team in the deal. If not, we're own-rentaling and hoping for the best. The expiring aspect of it is irrelevant.

This isn’t a good plan for Winnipeg in any case! You keep coming with the number he have this year to justify this trade but the fact is Hamilton have never posted those kind of number once before this year and it’s not even been close.

Have you seen the calamity of the right side of Winnipeg's defense? Outside of Pionk, their defense is an absolute dumpster fire. Hamilton instantly makes that defense a position of strength once again.

Have you heard of someone named Dylan Demelo. I heard they acquired him and are looking to resign him

Jets should extend DeMelo, he certainly does help some if he stays. I'm strictly talking about the guys under contract, though. I'm a big believer in building teams with elite pillars on the front and back. The Jets have a ton of firepower in the forward department but is a barren desert on defense, as far as franchise building-blocks are concerned. To me, Connor and Pionk for Hamilton re-balances their team and gives them that elite pillar that they need.

I could see them being interested in him but Connor? That's a bit to far

I will also point out that I've also offered Pesce and Geekie for Cirelli and Gourde in a trade, so my steep price tags go both ways with me. I'm a big believer in bold, sweeping moves, especially in the cap era where you're never guaranteed to keep a core of players together long-term.

Fleury doesn't have much value. Swap for Bean and it's a conversation..even then though. it's a little short.

I'm kind of thinking of it as the Calgary deal in reverse. To me, Connor is the Lindholm of the deal and Pionk + Samberg is the Hanifin. Hamilton is, um, Hamilton, and Fleury and Dzingel are the 2 2nd round picks that came from the Adam Fox deal. To me, it's a better deal for Winnipeg than even the 1st trade was for Carolina, and I love that deal to this day.

Also, $11.2 million for Hamilton? That is just way too steep. It's very difficult to get young, good players on reasonable AAV's in Winnipeg. A 40 goal scorer who's 23 on an AAV that is slightly over $7 million is not worth trading for a RHD that costs $11.2.

I think that it's a very close call between Hamilton, Josi, and Carlson, but the slight edge to Hamilton. One of the very few elite offensive defensemen that has the defensive aptitude to also play the penalty kill at an elite level. A total athletic and speed freak relative to his 6'6" height and 229 lb frame. There's really no defenseman in hockey that I would rather have than him.

I think you could re-write this deal similarly though.

Connor + Pionk for Hamilton + Honka.

But tbh, I don't think very highly of Connor or Pionk and I doubt Tulsky does either.

I'd presume he'd want Ehlers + Heinola.

Making this Ehlers + Heinola for Hamilton (extended) + Suzuki.

That's actually kinda close.

I tend to trust analytical figures that value game score and RAPM simultaneously. That's probably why I covet Connor and Pionk over Ehlers and Heinola. Heinola sort of under-achieved when re-assigned to Finland, which is a red flag to me.

I think what's getting lost in this debate is Dzingel has almost zero value to the Jets, there's about a 1% chance he's signing in Winnipeg so to regain any value out of him they'd need to trade him which isn't all that easy and him being a UFA won't get much of a return for the Jets, yeah I know it's easy on CapFriendly to say just trade him for X return but the reality is its probably not that easy. If this was Necas instead of Dzingel then this is maybe a trade worth considering but doubtful the Canes would consider that but maybe idk.

Also this idea that the Jets defense is its biggest issue is really overblown imo, the Jets have relied on its top 5 forwards to do all of its scoring this season and subtracting one of those guys for an offensive dmen isn't replacing a 40 goal scorer, period.
