It's far fetched but here's what I've got: Ottawa's books are essentially cleared this offseason given the amount of players coming off their books, and with nearly $40 million in cap room, they have space to go out and either make moves for free agents or bring in players via trade. Smith's inclusion in the trade is why this will cost Chicago the second round pick, while the other draft pick moves are some moving of the deck chairs (the Ottawa third is a move up for Chicago, and that valuation is based on Maatta shoring up (slightly, I know, but it's something) Ottawa's currently abysmal back-end outside of Chabot, who's obviously fantastic). The Sens take on short-term money, still have $30+ million in space ($25ish after Duclair, I assume), get some free draft picks, improve the defense, and Chicago gets salary relief in order to bring in Subban/offload the Seabrook contract so they free up long term money while retaining Crawford, Kubalik, Caggiula, and Koekkoek. If I had to rate this entire situation on a scale of 1-10, I'd choose "far-fetched" instead of a number, but it's the best I could think up.
