So the cap goes down....it goes down for all teams. There would be so few buyers and so many sellers trying to get rid of their "Johnssons", he won't fetch a second. Gee you might be not be rid of him at all.
Salaries for all players will go as negotiated between the owner and NHLPA...but that is tough to show in the CF format.

Cuz they’re able to get rid of Ladd and Boychuk for a combined 11 mill. If the cap goes down, it will be hard to re-sign Barzal and Pulock unless they do this

they arent getting Mayfield though, that defeats the purpose of the move. you will get draft picks not very good cheap roster players for a buyout that does not impact a teams Cap.

They got Dobson, Toews, Pudlock and Adam for their defense. Mayfield would be a 5th

and that means what? They just can give him away? Not happening. If they need to make room bc they have talent onto way they can get good assets for him not just throw him into a buyout trade

no it wont, thats a homer look at things. His salary goes down to 1.25m the next 2 years, actual dollars to buy him out is cheap. Actually look at what a buyout would look like before you take a crack at this and keep on saying its 6m cap hit to buyout

Youre dreaming if you think you can get a valuable roster player for low doallas to buyout with no cap issues with it

I seriously don't know what your talking about.
We will use our free compliance buyout on Boychuck. The islanders will use it on Ladd

actual dollars to buy his salary out...follow along you need to still pay them money. the actual dollars to buy him out is next to nothing. Teams will easily take on a CBO, Toronto isnt the only team who can do it, nor would it cost Islanders a valuable roster player to do it.

You are assuming the cost for buying out Boychuck is a homer value back in mayfield to the leafs. You will get draft picks not roster players
and this is a moot point bc there wont be a CBO, this is just this websites wet dream obsession right now

Buddy I know that. Nobody is gonna buy out players for free.
Just because your an avs fan and your a team without anyone to buyout doesn't mean you have to get mad. Taking these bad contracts aren't free

im just pointing out you are vast over valuing the cost to do a CBO, you are trying to convince yourself that you are goign to get a very helpful roster player.
No team is going to pay that price bc other teams will do it for draft capital instead, especially for a player that doesnt cost a team a lot of actual salary money to do it.

From the perspective of an Islanders fan, I don't hate it anymore. Dobson is more than ready for top-6 minutes and re-signing our RFAs is objective #1 this offseason. But with Bode Wilde being a year or two away still, I'm not thrilled about trading Mayfield, who is young, cheap and has played really well this year. But I could be willing to part with him if we used some of the money saved on another guy in free agency or something.

Between Boychuk and Ladd, I don't know who the Isles use a CBO on if they only have 1. Ladd's contact is manageable if it's buried, while Boychuk is currently burying our best prospect. But if they wound up with a proxy 2nd one for a relatively reasonable price (which this is imo), I wouldn't necessarily be upset.

I just dont think you have to trade mayfield to get rid of Boychuck in a CBO option. You can still move Mayfield but you can gain assets for him, not burn him and a 3rd to make Boychuk go away

Under normal circumstances, I would totally agree. This specific scenario would need a lot to go right in order to happen; Islanders would have to realize that there would be no way for them to sign everyone, plus make needed upgrades without some major money moves, while the Leafs would have to be content enough with all of their contracts not to use their CBO on someone they already have. The Islanders would have to make it worth Toronto's while, considering all of the money Boychuk is still owed ($8 million over two seasons).

Maybe to make it work the Islanders would get an actually asset back rather than just a 7th in three years. Because you're right, as things stand in this scenario the Leafs stand to gain somewhat more than NYI does.

just looking at his buyout in actually monies, its something like 400k for the next 4 years? Its not a lot bc it drops off signficantly salary wise the final 2 years. Bc of the no cap penalty teams can just take that on for like a couple draft picks IMO, sure gives us a couple picks and we will use our buyout but only spend 1m-2m in actual real dollars to do so.

Unless I am really missing something looking at the buyout breakdown

I didn’t know no-penalty buyouts worked the same way tbh, so that’s helpful thanks. I figured that they had to pay the remainder of the salary, maybe over more time, as like a trade-off for no cap penalty (which in hindsight makes no sense).

It’s still real money Toronto has to pay but 1. It’s not too much and 2. It’s Toronto, they’ll be fine. But the Islanders still have to pay a price, whether or not that’s Mayfield I guess is up for debate.

Again, I’d be willing to do that trade as is, so long as Toronto sends a legitimate asset back. Not sure what that would be, but they have some decent minor leaguers idk

Not bad but I say toronto returns a 4th round pick back and just takes mayfield as the offer for buying out boychuck
