Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 20, 2020
Published: Apr. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't see Carolina resigning Hamilton with Svech, and Necas due for a contract next year and they're stable D core without him. This deal only makes sense with Hamilton resigning in WPG and if they can figure out their cap with Buff. WPG sends Ehlers (the main piece), Poolman (solid, cheap RHD) , and a 1st rounder. CAR sends back Hamilton (extended), Dzingel (offensive replacement-ish for Ehlers but only locked in for 1 more year) and one of their 2nds.

Cant see the Canes moving Dougie. A Dougie trade would be more likely to happen in 4 years when Aho and Turbos contracts are up. Otherwise they should be able to fit everyone in the cap within that 4 years.

Dougie is great but he is due for a $4-5M pay raise. I think what makes Carolina's D-core is so impressive because they're all on pretty fair contracts, giving Dougie $10M is just gonna kill the surrounding team cap flexibility. Take him out and you already have a fairly solid D corps. Svech will probably get at least $7M on a bridge, Necas will get at least $5M if he keeps progressing. Also, you'll need to find and pay for a starting goalie. I say move Dougie for a really good top 6 forward with term + and your team is still comfortably set up for consistent playoff success.

Detroit's not giving up Svechnikov+2nd+3rd for an aging Reimer and Fleury. Yeah Detroit's not doing that.

First off, Necas isn't up the same year as Hamilton and Svechnikov.

Let's do some math. Carolina has 10 players under contract for 2021-2022 aggregating about $49.4 million. Add Suzuki and Bokk and we're at $51.2 million. Re-up Hamilton and Svechnikov for a total of $16.8 million and we're at $68 million with 14 roster slots filled. Assuming a cap ceiling of $83 million, that leaves $15 million to spread among 9 players, most of whom will be minimal contracts except for a first-class goalie. In short, I don't see a need to move Hamilton at all.

I think Stevie Y wouldn't go beyond a second for the two of them together.

I think that Hamilton, if his ask is over $10M AAV and the Canes are unable to agree to terms, is the kind of trade piece that would ideally be in a star-for-star or star-for-first rate NHL depth deal. I know Jets fans hate this idea, but if I was the FO, I would be aggressive and make Kyle Connor + the asking price (and no, much like Faulk, Hamilton's not leaving Carolina without an extension). Don't settle for less, because I am sure that a team like Anaheim, if they have to, will offer an equivalent package like the Fowler/Rakell/Zegras package that I proposed earlier this week. Elite RHD are perhaps tied with elite 1st line center as the single-most sought after player type in hockey.

I agree Svech ok but Yzerman isn't trading those picks.
