if cap stays the same

Created by: SammyT_51
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 3, 2020
Published: Apr. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It should go up half of what it would normally go due to coronavirus affecting revenue, but lets say the cap stays the same.

Also lets say that Barabanov plays on 2RW/2LW to weight out the lineup nicely. He could also play on 4th line just with moving Nylander on RW and moving Mikheyev to 2LW. I like it.

Realistic approach to this. Contracts are pretty good IMO. Leafs might have to add a middle pick there to get that kind of salary retained, but overall pretty good!

A lot will depend on who they trade for D and who they can get to 3C instead of Kerfy. Kerfy is good therefore they might deal him for better D than Larsson and move Johnsson for center like Faksa.. who knows. I tried to be realistic with this.

Doubt the Ducks take that, 3C isnt a need for us, if Lundy gets moved its for a similar valued RD prospect swap, I doubt we move him though

One of the real problem with the Leafs moving Johnsson. or other other teams moving cap, is that there are so few team that can take on additional cap.
Even the Oilers are looking at 70m right now with 15 players signed. That gives them just 11m to sign 8 players. The trade proposed adds 1.6m to the Oiler cap. So while the trade might be more than fair to Oilers ..three years of Johnsson for one year of Larsson, is it cap possible for the Oilers?

Edmonton declines. Johnsson isn't worth Larsson on his own, let alone with 50% retained.

Edmonton would not retain any salary in a trade like this. That being said, I still think that it is a relatively fair transaction for both teams. A real hockey trade.

I have no desire at all to move Kerfoot. He is a perfect 3C under contract for the next three years at a relatively reasonable AAV.

No more Gauthier. No need for him anymore. Spezza, Brooks, all capable of doing the job as 4th liners.

That Kerfoot trade doesn't make much sense for a rebuilding team like the Ducks.

I think i have done 12 gm leaf teams trying to figure this very thing out. There are 100 trades that make sense from a value for value perspective ie hockey trades. However the cap situation around the league is troubling to teams like the leafs. An extra million retained or traded can handcuff a team moving fwd. With that said i thinknthe leafs have 2 choices trade kappanen kerfoot or johnnson to a cap sapce team ie ott or njd for a pick or several picks to clear their cap to hit the ufa market strong and sign a big ticket dman . This is not ideal as this wouldnt maximize the value of these nhl caliber players. Almost a strategic salary dump scenario. Option 2 is going to be very unpopular with leaf fans and its basically do nothing major resign all your obvious guys and add 1 million dollar veteran defenceman to try and plug holes for now. This option is probably the best thing for the organization but the fan base would flip.

The Leaf certainly haven't the worse cap situation. Other teams with NTC and are team that have trouble signing their own RFAs.
One suggestion I had was just give 3.4m Johnsson away and replace him with a 925,000 winger. Now Johnsson playing value certainly is OK but in these crazy cap situation for so many teams, the Leafs (and other teams) just might no choice. Last year the Leaf had to give up a 1st just get rid of Marleau's 6.25 cap year for one year.
I know so many folk think the Leafs Dmen are just so bad. I don't believe that. For one, the Leafs worse Dman last year Barrie will be gone. Ceci and has 4,5m cap hit is gone. Reilly, Muzzin and Dermot were all on LTIR. Reilly, Muzzin, Dermot, Sandin, Holl, Marincin and Liljegren....that's 7 at just 19.5m. Gotta think there a way to sign a competent NHLer. You're 1m solution might be the answer.
If we looked at revenues for the 2019/20 season, gee the cap should for 2020/21 should really be 70m. The owners and the NHLPA have to find a solution to the cap. Plus the NHLPA and its members will have to vote and the sharing of their share of the cap. I believe ALL salaries might be reduced. If I was betting the 2020/21 season will not start in October, and really the whole season could be lost.

I have confidence that the cap situation is the least of the nhl and nhlpa proplems and that they will find a solution. As for the season its done in my opinion. But the playoffs is the great hope and it is time to get creative. Best of 3 instead of best of 7 is something ive thought of. Brutal i know but they need to find a way to play a series a week in August if thats the date they start. Stanley Cup final is best of 7

Let's hope the world is alright and there is normalcy as you indicated by August. But really, this virus has to be gone world wide before there is resumption of sports events at any level.

yeah I could see johnsson going for that 1 vs 1 trade but I do not see Edmonton retaining that much maybe 500k but thats it. As for Kerfoot I just do not see him going to the Ducks.
