The dead contract is valuable to Ottawa. Sens are trying to operate close to the floor, and an LTIR contract like Gaborik gives them the full 4.875mil against the cap, while only having to pay 10-20% of the contract, with the rest being covered through the insurance on the contract.

Also the sens have plenty of depth options. Also trading valuable assets to add fringe depth pieces is stupid to begin with.
