If the season suddenly ends, there is a large question surrounding draft picks traded for rentals.. There is the possibility that teams get their picks back, but that seems unlikely and would be hard to manage. A potential way to compensate teams can be with compliance buyouts? Let's say the league gave every team 1 buyout. If a team gave up a 1st, they get 2 extra compliance buyouts. If it is a 2nd or 3rd, they get 1 extra compliance buyout. Obviously, the league could also do nothing to compensate teams who went after rentals. What are your thoughts on potential options regarding picks traded at the deadline?

I dont think its really fair to give extra compliance buyouts. It may sound harsh but I think they should just leave it how it is. The team that traded for rentals also take on the risk of that player getting injured, not performing well on the new team, etc.

Having a hard cutoff of 1st round pick = 2 buyouts, 2nd round pick = 1 buyout doesnt really make sense when the draft order is finalized. If one team trades the 31st overall pick for a rental and another team trades the 32nd overall pick for a rental it doesnt seem fair that one would get an extra compliance buyout. Also, what would happen for teams like Arizona? Yes they traded a lot for Hall, but they also got Blake Speers, who is not a rental. How would you distingush the value of rentals in trades where there were multiple pieces moving both ways?

No chance the league compensates teams that traded for rentals. When you trade for a rental, you run the risk of them getting injured or that they don’t fit in, or whatever else. Sure no one could’ve foreseen this, but there’s nothing the league can do. The NHL won’t compensate teams because they made a bad trade, it was their choice to do it. One thing that will need to be figured out is conditional picks though, since some of these depend on a full season being played.

Don't think you can do anything, just bite the bullet and move forward once the virus is over and done with, you can't go around reverting trade deadline moves. As people have already said in this thread, any deadline buyer already takes a major risk when buying a player (injuries and so on), so really isn't much to be done with regards to compensation.
