If Byfield isnt NHL ready

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 5, 2020
Published: Apr. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Give him the Draisaitl treatment, except instead of keeping him up far too long, let him take another year in junior to work out his flaws and become an even more dominant player. A shot at a Memorial Cup in a winning environment will do a lot to turn him into a leader for this team.

Turris probably makes for a better #1C right now than a rookie would.

Absolutely no to Turry. Love him to death but that contract is a nonstarter for me. Especially if we're giving up Tierney and Chlapik.

If Byfield isn't ready we should keep Tierney. Sign a 1 year deal, and try and pump him like with Pageau.

Honestly, you should draft Rossi instead (if you cant have both). Hes probably the most NHL ready after Laf and have a highest floor on the opposite of Byfield.

Byfield will be better off in the long run playing another season in the OHL and have another chance at the WJC, most likely on the top 6

There's $18.5M in cap space. Byfield playing an extra year in junior will cause his deal to slide. That $6M literally means nothing to the Senators. Worst-case scenario, Ryan's expiring deal pays for Brannstrom's next contract and the marginal raise that Duclair will need. Anisimov's deal will cover half of Tkachuk's raise. Batherson and Brown can split the Nilsson money on a bridge deal. There's absolutely no reason for the Senators to turn down Turris because he's "too expensive".

You're giving up a #3C and a ruined prospect for a guy who could step back into being a top center for this team. What the hell am I missing?

Why don't they just take Rossi at #3?

It doesn't make sense to trade for four years of Kyle Turris when you only want him for one year. By next season you're already paying him to be your 3rd or 4th Centre.

Just because the cap space is there now, doesn't mean you have to fill it with a bloated contract.

Who's forcing him out of the role? Byfield likely starts as the #2C or #3C with White on his wing. Norris takes the other hole, and Turris remains the defacto #1C.

Toss him to Seattle if you don't want all four years of him then.

But then you're paying assets to get Seattle to take him.

A better solution is to just keep Tierney and have him play with Tkachuk. Tierney has been pretty comparable to Turris over the last several years in terms of production, and then you can trade him to add more assets towards the rebuild. Rather than trading away assets to get rid of Turris to Seattle.

Byfield plays like Malkin, reminds of the lanky frame and doesn't look NHL ready but that IQ is insane. Byfield>>Dach and can play 2nd line while mentored by Bobby Ryan and speedy winger Duclair

Nah man if I’m the Sens, my rankings for selections are:
1) Laf
2) Byfield
3) Stutzle
4) Raymond
5) Rossi
6) Drysdale
7) Holtz

And he'd be right to do it. I don't like the sour way Turris left, I think he was owed more respect than he was given. That said, the organization balked at his 6×6 asking price and it's hard to argue that it wasn't the right decision.

at the time, that was pretty fair market value, hindsight seeing how he has dropped his production since the trade it makes it easier to agree that it was the right move.
Before that he has what 4 55+ point seasons in a row, you gives those guys 6m all day every day on the open market. Pageau just signed for 5m aav...thats just UFA price for top 6 Cs goign to market

That is a HUGE overpayment for a guy that Nashville would love off their books. Hell, you could get Turris for Chalpik and a late 2nd. The real question is why would you? If this was the last year of his deal, MAYBE, but he's 31 in August and has 4 years (24 million dollars) remaining on his contract. Just because you have money to burn doesn't mean you should. Derrick Brassard is a UFA this summer, offer him $3M for one year if you feel the need to bring in a pivot to give Byfield, Norris and Brown more time.
