Initial Creation Date: Apr. 5, 2020
Published: Apr. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs and Matthews agree that Leafs will use the CBO on him, paying him out full, and then resign him 1Mx4, and he ends up with more money, leafs end up with more cap space, win win. situation. This roster would be come playoffs, as I suspect Robertson will make the jump by the end of the year. Matthews wouldn't proceed to screw them over and sign elsewhere immediately because some close friends around the team (Marner, heck even Justin Bieber) would hate him for it, and it wouldn't be viewed nicely around the league. Leafs players would line him up with big hits multiple times per game, as would others around the league who see it as a beach move. Lots of defensemen now, so when injuries come, we are ready. If someone isn't playing well, there are options to replace them. Sandin, Dermott, and liljegren battle it out on the third pair. Potential for Dermott/liljegren to get moved later in the season if a major opportunity arises. Forward depth, specifically center depth also better. In LTIR are the potential call ups

Beat me too it. I’ve seen and said the same thing to people suggesting that idea with Marner.

Yeah its like rule #1,you have to wait a ywar before you can resign them. You cant trade him to another team either to have them buy hin out then resign him. Tampa attempted that last time and the league deemed it cap circumvention.

And what about Micheal Stone who got bought out last summer by Calgary and signed a new deal one month later with the Flames.

The CBA only forbids the signing of players bought out using compliance buyouts for one year. There is no restriction on re-signing players on ordinary course buyouts.

So the Leafs and Matthews "agree" to this. Leafs give the NHL office the buyout paperwork. Then Matthews is a UFA. Matthews doesn't honour the meaningless verbal agreement. Leafs don't have any recourse. It's like when a drug dealer takes your money and refuses to give you the agreed amount of crack. Try going to the police with a "theft" compliant.

That was not a compliance buy out
