I think Ovi might get more $$$!
I know, I know he's not young but man he's still a beast and that's only about US$500K raise.
Yes he might take a hometown discount but WSH will likely pay in the US$11M to 12M range maybe?

If there is a compliance buyout given, I honestly believe that it will be Oshie.

Interesting option but since I'm not sure McMichael is NHL ready how do they replace him?

Question, would Caps be open to a Russian prospect swap: Kostin for Alexeyev?

His contract 5 more years at $5.75M. He will be 34 half way through next season, and 38 when the contract expires. The probability is diminishing returns each season. You might not be able to replace his numbers next year, but there is a lot that can be done with $5.75M space next year, and a lot to be done with it for the 4 years following next year.

Backstrom is getting a $2.5M bump next year.
Only 4 of the current NHL roster D under contract for next year. Two of those aren't really top-4 quality.
Of the 3 goalies under contract there is a total of 55 NHL games experience. Plus, the one with 29 games experience is in the AHL, when he really belongs.

Replacing a 34 year old winger is not the top concern vs having $5.75M more to use.

Good point. Kovalchuk could be a nice guy to bring back on a 1 year, 2,5 mil deal or something along those lines

I think Oshie is going to be at the same level (or close) next season. With the expansion draft looming, I'd expect MacLellan would work out a deal for Seattle to select Oshie in the expansion draft.

Possible, but isn't the idea of a CBO coming into play if there is a cap reduction this fall? That is a year before the expansion and the $5.75M hurts this fall if there is a cap reduction.

If there is no cap reduction then there is no reason for a compliance buyout.

If there's indeed a cap decrease and a CBO option given, then perhaps Oshie is the best option. Holtby coming off of the books at least helps a bit. I think it really depends on how the depth shakes out. IMO, it's a big gamble to bet on McMichael being ready for a top six role.
