Nice. If the season was still going on I was wondering if he would have insisted on burning a year of his ELC this season.

Yeah, that leverage ended a while ago for him (and every other great NCAA prospect), unfortunately.

3 years is kind of surprising but everything else is expected. Great signing

Boom!

Great selection in the 2nd round and great signing. Jets will have a much improved back end going into next season and very youthful with the likes of Samberg, Niku & Heinola joing the likes of Morrissey, Pionk, Poolman and hopefully a resigned Demelo as I like how he has paired with Morrissey.

You guys should sew up DeMelo for 5 or even 6 years.

This is a quality signing for a team that needs defensive help. He comes from a really solid program so there is some potential there that he might make the jump sooner rather than later.
I haven't really seen enough of his play yet as I'm sure is true for just about everyone else on here. But if WPG is lucky he makes the jump in 1 year or less.

All rookie deals are 3 years.
"If a player is between 18 and 21 years old, their ELC is for three years."

Not ncaa players who are less than 3 years away from free agency. Since they have that leverage they usually go for less term on their elc.

it's all rookie deals based on the timing of the contract. If you are under 21 when the contract starts it's 3 years.
There is example after example of this. Evan Barratt, Hunter Drew, etc...
The 2 year contracts you are referring too are in reference of guys who will turn 22 by the start of the season.

You’re thinking of players like Quinn Hughes, Poehling, and Boeser, who sign their ELC near the end of the year, but play games in the NHL, burning the 1st year of their contracts. Their contracts are the same length but they start in the current season, rather than the next season.
