I think that’s almost fair. As long as the 2020 1st OR Cozens is included, Calgary won’t close the phone. But not sure if Calgary would prefer Montour or Miller over Risto.

why not? jeff skinner did. hell, two guys did in the past 2 months.

He also doesn't have a NTC until July 1 and even then its only a modified no trade with a list of 10 teams he can refuse.

And Antti Raanta is not being traded for nothing. Calgary also still has their analytics guy Chris Snow in their front office who was the guy who nixed a potential Ristolainen trade possibility a couple years ago. They don't want him.

You can also make a case that such a payment of assets on Buffalo's end hurts their depth long term giving up a lottery pick, Mittelstadt, and Ristolainen who by himself is at least a top 9 forward and worth picks and prospects, and they leave themselves with no farm, and no draft picks for a team thats nowhere near a contender right now, which means no currency to make other moves when you do start winning.

Arizona will want more for raanta, and Hutton won’t be part of the return

Skinner left a Carolina organization that was middiling for an organization that was a notch below but at least close to home. Monahan is from the Toronto area, but highly doubt he's leaving a playoff contender for Buffalo, an organization which has not shown it can get its act together.
He also doesn't have a NTC until July 1 and even then its only a modified no trade with a list of 10 teams he can refuse. Im sure Buffalo will be on that list with Edmonton, Detroit, and Ottawa. if it's as big as ten teams im prettry sure Buffalo will be on that list

Jeff skinner was also on a hurricanes team that sucked at the time. Flames are a playoff team, buffalo is not. Also Calgary>>>>buffalo in terms of the actual city itself

Since my trade involves my 2020 1st, the trade will be before the clause kicks in. And you are wrong

Thanks for addressing that his modified no trade kicks in after this trade is made.

Not sure why you need to attack the city of buffalo. I've said nothing negative about other cities

its not an attack I just don't think a Canadian player would choose to live in buffalo over Calgary

Love the Monahan deal. Best trade idea I've seen on here (ignoring the insanely one-sided ones which would be great too...). Pass on giving up so much for Raanta. Let Hutton ride out another year or waive him. Either way, let Ullmark carry the load.

I would say that is completely unfounded.

You are also still ignoring that this trade is made at or before the draft, which comes before the no trade clause kicks in, which only comes with a 10 team no trade list.

ok then my next question is why would CGY trade their top C when they have nobody to replace him?

I like Risto and think he could fit in decently in Calgary; doesnt need to be relied on defensively, a much needed PPQB, heavy hitter, can still log big minutes while Gio makes up for his faults (Valimaki makes up for his faults down the line). But there is no way in hell Calgary is moving their 1C for him. Mittelstadt hasnt shown enough consistency either so I would probably want Cozens. As we would need a top 6 center replacement soon. Also as stated above, Snow still leads the analytics department and is not a fan of Risto at all. Lets say he does approve of Risto this time around, I dont think Calgary has the assets to acquire him without giving up core pieces. Maybe there's some interest in Kylington to fix thier left side, and Bennett in the hopes that a change of scenery fixes his game but i doubt it.

Also, the 1st you included is most likely lotto protected right? So he brcomes a prospect that is at least 3-4 years out from a solid NHLer. Calgary is in their eindow of opportunity, not rebuilding. Cozens at lwast has shown he can maybe make the jump next year. But trading Monahan basically says "yeah were letting Gaudreau walk."
