What I would do - 1st Edition

Created by: RoyBoy71
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 5, 2020
Published: Apr. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
ASSUMPTIONS:
- The salary cap will not go up nor down
- Habs do not get a top-3 draft pick this summer
- They do not have a "win now" mentality
- No compliance buyout

REASONING:
Tatar trade: Habs need to take advantage of Tatar's contract and production to a team that wants to win right now. Habs also address their top-4 D issues with Nurse. I believe anyone playing with Corsi leaders Gallagher and Danault will benefit. A guy like Domi could maybe get 70 points especially that he will have more playing time as well.
3 1st rounders: Habs don't need an abundance of prospects anymore; they already do and it cost them Houde and Fonstad who could not sign since you can't sign every prospect! Habs will be able to draft high-touted kids, especially defensemen in the first round.
Ilya Kovalchuk: I think there is a gentleman's agreement here for him to return. A fellow Russian to help out Romanov could be useful off-ice as well.
Halak: Bring back the savior of the 2010 playoffs. Price will not be confined to play 70+ games. Besides, Halak can win games as a backup. Another option would be Greiss from NYI.
Laughton: Good pickup who can help offensively, is young and has a great faceoff record in his short career.
KK and Poehling: I think KK is ready to make a permanent jump. If not, then switch him with Poehling on the 3rd line.

Given the cap situation, the habs are not interested in helping rival TB out of their cap issues. I doubt Serg nor Cirelli would be made available to entice teams to help them.

DRAFT:
They pick the top player still available from the order of this list:
- Jamie Drysdale
- Marco Rossi
- Alexander Holtz
- Lucas Raymond
- Anton Lundell
- Cole Perfetti
For the other first round picks, they should target Braden Schneider, Ryan O'Rourke, Jeremie Poirier and Justin Barron for top-D prospects.

AHL:
Hudon - Poehling - Belzile
Vejdemo- Dauphin - Ylönen
Teasdale - Blandisi - (Maksimov)
Harvey-Pinard- Hillis - Alain
extra: Pezzetta, Verbeek, McShane
Laval also re-signs Cox and Veilleux. Veilleux was a great addition for an AHLer so look for him to possibly steal a spot as well.

Olofsson - Ouellet
Leskinen - Brook
Alzner - RD
Laval signs whoever on RD to an AHL contract. No need to waste a 50-player roster contract to fill that hole.

Primeau - Lindgren

edmonton has no use for kulak as introducing him to the lineup will create a logjam
Edmonton probably will say no because of how deep this year's draft is

Very interesting points made, I am also on board to capitalize on Tatar and help address our D. I think that our left side is starting to take shape and now our right side has some question marks so I’d rather move him for a RHD like Timmins or someone similar.

I like the idea of moving some picks and some prospects who likely won’t be signed due to our contract limit and moving up into late first round could produce some solid talent down the road. Personally we’re headed in the right direction just need to have some patience, and not make any desperate moves in an attempt to speed things up.

They could also use a combination of 2 of their 1 round picks to move up to get Drysdale. Drysdale could potentially replace Petry (if he is ready) after his contract is done.

Drysdale is the perfect fit for the habs, I would love to have him, would be nice to move up it’s always hard to judge what that would cost.

Maksimov is to my accounts a B-prospect RW not a D. Tatar has more value than I thought he had plus Oilers is in need of a top-6 winger. The first is balanced with the early second and third.

Laughton has been very good for Philadelphia this year. I don't really see them moving him for this return.

Sorry I was thinking about Samarukov. No way Oilers do this. Nurse is our number 1 D and Part of the OIlers core with Drai and Mcdavid. Tartars value is whatever you think it is. But we are not trading Nurse for a UFA period. Nurse is a machine, he can play 30 minutes a night, crushes people and can skate like the wind. He also has the most passes to players on the oilers which everyone THINKS he is bad at. Never going to happen. We can get Johnsson for a 2nd from the leafs and we traded for AA to be McDavids wingman when he gets up to speed. Tartar and the Oilers are past its best before date. You guys wanted to much for him at trade deadline, which is why he is still on your team
