See, this is the exact reason why Puljujarvi is playing overseas. If he is coming back over, he’s going to be playing with Connor or at the very least, a skilled Center.
Also, as much as I like Smiths competitiveness; he’s done.

Did he say he wants to play with an elite center?

basically yes, he did not like how he was used on the 3rd line and told to be a net front presence guy, thats not his game at all and asking him to play completely opposite of what made him a top draft pick is mind boggling

hes not going to sign with the oilers especially if thats their plan for him again

No, but I’m pretty sure he wants an opportunity. Playing with a 36 year old, regressing center is not being given an opportunity. The guy has fantastic numbers in the time played with Mcdavid; better than Nugent-Hopkins, Pouliot, Maroon, Kassian, and way ahead of Rattie.

Yikes I didn’t know that was the case. I thought it was because he had attitude issues & didn‘t want to commit to playing defense. I agree though, he definitely needs to see ice time with an elite center, especially if his results were really good.

even after the drafted him, it was they need a winger for McDavid talk....they gave Kassian, guys on PTOs like Chiasson and reward them with extensions after playing with McDavid, countless waiver wire pick ups tried as well, yet they just refused to let him be in that spot. Wouldnt you get frustrated too if yo were him?

Yeah absolutely it seems like the coaching staff was quite unreasonable on his usage. I just checked the video posted by the Hockey Guy about this issue & in the comments, a lot of people were criticizing Jesse for not having the hockey sense & work ethic to play without mcDavid.

And better than Rantanen's numbers with MacKinnon at the same age. And better than Pastrnak's numbers with Bergeron at the same age. Now consider that most of Puljujarvi's time with McDavid also included offensive-black-hole Milan Lucic on the other wing...

Well damn, that’s really a joke on the organization’s part then. If you him to be a star in the league, gotta treat him like one.

He got a fair bit of time next to McDavid actually. The issue I had is that his time with McDavid was never contiguous, it changed shift by shift and period by period and game by game. Colorado glued Rantanen to MacKinnon's hip and it eventually paid off, despite the fact that Rantanen had inferior results to Puljujarvi at the same age.

And then there was the PP. I think you need your most skilled guys out on the PP, yet Puljujarvi never really got a chance like his contemporaries did. He did get some time on the 2nd unit, but even that was inconsistent.

Correct, although he never gave any reasons why. So any time you hear someone spouting off about "why" Puljujarvi isn't in the NHL, just remember that it's purely speculation on their part, not fact.

he sort of did in a Finnish interview but the translations are always so rough to English, but from it that notion of asking him to be a grinder is talked about and he asked for a trade.

regardless its clear he has asked a trade, that relationship is probably beyond repair so there is. no way he comes back to the oilers

The rough translations came across like he was demanding a top-6 spot, but I had a Finnish guy tell me that's not at all what he was saying - more like he thought he could attain to a top-6 spot in the NHL and wanted a chance to prove it (IIRC).

Very true. Although it's worth noting that most of the hockey operations has had an overhaul, most of the personnel has changed since JP was around. If Holland or Lehto can't find a decent deal for him, I think it's possible he re-signs with the Oilers. He really, really wants to play in the NHL, so if his agent sits him down and says "Look, we can't find a deal right now, you need to go back to the NHL to really re-build your value and the only avenue is the Oilers", then I could see him signing a 1-year deal with the understanding that they'll look to trade him once he proves his value in the NHL.

its tough for players to swallow their pride after situations like this, the relationship is strained, it will never be back to normal and one way or another he is getting traded.
just look at Athanasiou, he has a very strained relationship with Detroit after painful contract talks. Eventually guys are moved and dont bounce back to be long term members of teams

at this point, it really will be best for both sides just to move on.

Yup, probably true. But I'll note that the strained relationship between Athanasiou and his GM in Detroit didn't result in him moving on, as it was that same GM who traded for him !

guys are usually upset at the franchise, not just one GM.
Guys more want trades bc of coaches, not bc of GMs...its always strained realtionships with the franchise, bc Athanasiou isnt the one doing the negotiationing, its his agent with the GM.

so with Jesse, it probably is the whole org, bc it seems like coach, gm, dev system,.....the over arching plan for him had a complete disconnect and he could just be done with it all and wants a break from the org.
