Samberg or Heinola

Created by: bnormie46
Team: 2020-21 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 7, 2020
Published: Apr. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Samberg is older and twice the size of Heinola
Samberg does play a strong defensive game
Heinola's Hockey IQ is extremely good
Samberg is used to the North American style hockey
Both have Top 4/2 potential

Both play Left and neither are 3rd paring playersbut top 4 or possibly top 2. The question is, who is the odd man out here. I could see Samberg on the first paring with Morrisey due to his size and defensive play. Heinola would suit the 2nd pairing but there is Pionk on the right and neither players have size or strong defensive capabilities.

Personally if things plan out, I could see Samberg being a Trouba equivalent but plays defense and Heinola similair to Pionk but higher point potential.

I see Samberg playing 3ld this year and heinola next to pionk. Demelo also gets resigned to play next to JoMo for sure. That has to be # 1 on chevy’s to do list

Why do you have to choose between them? I dont think you should expect either of them to step onto the 1st pairing as a rookie (if they can handle it then fine, but I wouldnt expect them to). Its likely both will play sheltered mins on the 2nd/3rd pair for the first little while anyway. WPG should get some more experienced guys to fill out the rest of the D core

Neither get paid for a good while and next year one or both could be moose, I would expect atleast one of them getting top min on moose til Xmas min, jets like a solid 8 nhl dman so if there 3/4 on the lhd side and move up to 2/3 in the next three years til you need to decide. Could be an embarrassment of riches on lhd and need to find a rhd to solidify that side, 5/6 of heinola/poolman wouldn’t be bad or a 3/4 of samberg/pionk and then a morrisey/demelo. With beaulieu/and a moose in reserve

There's nothing wrong with having a rookie playing 3rd pairing.

I don't think it is worthwhile to have three guys on the defense core that have yet to complete an NHL season. Keep in mind Niku is pretty much a lock. The Jets need to either bring back DeMelo or make one UFA signing on the back end. They can always try rotating through the two of them, or give a 9 game trial for Sanberg.

Samberg is more Nhl ready, he will make the team next year hopefully as a 3LD if we can find a good defensive experienced Dman (Edmundson or Dillon). Heinola definitely has the higher ceiling forsure though. He reminds me of Miro Heiskanen. He will be playing top playing minutes on the moose and will make the team in 2021-2022

Heinola needs a year on the Moose

JoMo - DeMelo
Samberg/Kulikov - Pionk
Kulikov/Samberg - Poolman

If Samberg can play with his friend and hometown buddy in Pionk, thats great but if he needs 3rd line mins to start, Kulikov can take his place. Kulkov and Pionk played decent in the last part of this season.
