Unpopular opinion about Subban

Team: 2019-20 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2020
Published: Apr. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
He's never been anywhere close to elite. He's had one amazing season and 3 very good seasons, but that's it. It was Markov and his intelligence that made him better.

PK has always been a bonified number 2 d-man but has never been a true number one for a long time.

He's always been a dumb player who makes stupid plays for absolutely no reason what so ever. That's why Plekanec, Pacioretty, Desharnais, Therrien and even Cammalleri and Gionta were sick and tired of Subban.

I can't even name all of his dumb plays, it would take me a full day to do that.

And lastly, PK's decline was easy to predict. I predicted it in 2017. Of course I wasn't here on Cap Friendly bac then, didn't even know the website existed actually, but I predicted that Subban's style of play is unsustainable and that by his early to mid 30s he would be completely washed up. Well, it seems that I was right.

It's not to say that «oh well I'm the best and I know everything», it's just saying that I knew all along that MTL fleeced NSH in the trade and that the latter would regret it in a matter of a few years... they did, and every single hockey expert who said back when the trade happened that MTL got fleeced has been proven very wrong in a matter of a few seasons.

I don't know that I'd say Montreal fleeced Nashville. Nashville unloaded Subban and got some picks out of it, while Montreal still has Weber who has had some injuries while playing for them. Right now I'd say Nashville won just because of the cap space, but that quickly gets reversed if Weber retires and destroys Nashville's cap with recapture penalties.

I don't think your opinion is that "unpopular". Looks pretty factual now and even at the time of the trade. Weber' cap hit and longer term might be detriment to Montreal in the future which might balance the trade a bit more.

MTL isn't going to be in a cap crunch for a long time so Weber's cap hit isn't even that bad. Plus add that to the fact that he'll be an amazing mentor to Romanov, Fleury and Brook plus maybe 1--2 others and Weber will be worth his contract, mark my words.

At age 34, I'm wondering if Weber will even want to play for 7 more years. I'm doubting his 7.8m cap hit effectiveness later. Of course he does decline, he just might retire instead of playing for little money on his front loaded contract/

The other thing is looking at what each team did after the trade. Preds played in a Cup Final, Habs haven't won a playoff round with Weber. Pretty easy case to be made that Preds won (again unless Weber retires).

To go off topic....We've seen soooooo many posts that the Leafs HAVE to trade Marner for Seth Jones, cause Jones is is the magically player that lead in the Leaf to the Cup in his two remaining years. The same Jones that won one playoff round in seven NHL seasons.

I see Weber having a Chara-esque effect in his later years. He'll be decent defensively although likely slower, he still will have a ripper of a shot and of course as mentioned before, his intangibles and leadership will instill a good attitude and feel in this team for years to come. Subban is all about the Subban show. Which is great for retiring in NJ and joining the shore.

Subban has always been overrated and now age plus injuries have made him worse, still can't believe the Preds managed to get picks/prospects to dump him, the Devils got fleeced!

A few years ago I kept hearing all the time that Weber will be slow when he reaches his late 30s... uhhhh wait a second here... his speed/mobility has never been his strength yet he's been considered to be one of the best d-men in the league for a decade or so now.

As a MTL fan, I always hear the ignorant fans who were so caught up with Subban and the trade. What they don't understand is that Weber is a much better player, although less flashy, he brings a steady presence and great leadership to a young team with some great defensive prospects who will need mentoring. He plays a style of play that is much more sustainable through his 30s.

I still hate the Subban trade but to be fair to him the Devils defense has been terrible the last 4-5 years. I think it has been a combination of Subban declining/ slowing down and the Devils having no one else with any talent to play on defense (outside of Severson). By the time the season stopped the Devils parings were Mueller - Subban, Mermis - Severson, and Butcher/Claeson - Carrick; that is just not good enough .
