If they do rebuild

Created by: Marcsnack
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A lot of questions surrounding this team if they rebuild
1) If there is a CBO, do they use it on Jones or Vlasic?
2) Would they retain any money on guys signed to long-term deals if they dealt them?
3) Couture, Kane, Hertl, Burns and Jones have 3 team trade lists; which teams would each one accept to go to?
4) Would Vlasic or Karlsson ever waive their NMC to get dealt?

A lot of questions surrounding this aging team. A rebuild seems like the smart option going forward, but are they willing to take that path?

Of course only they know, but I am curious if anything has ever been leaked or if people have hunches? Does Kane put a team like Vancouver on there to play at home? And did Vlasic actually waive it??

Well I guess I dont know 100% but it was largely reported he may have been willing when MTL inquired and a deal was almost made

Yeah, I would have to think his hometown is the one place he would be willing to waive to.

1) I'd pick whoever's normal buyout would mess up the Sharks the most. I am assuming that's Vlasic.
2) I'd say don't, it'd be better to get a lesser return and draft in the top 5 for multiple drafts, no retained salary and now the prospects you've drafted are likely better than the one in the possible better return.
3) Honestly if the team is in rebuild mode, keep the ones who refuse to waive, those are the big names you want to mentor your new prospects. They clearly love it there. Also, I'd keep Couture forever.
4) Vlasic was already answered. I bet if the team is rebuild mode Karlsson would probably want out anyways.

The sad thing here is the team can’t really rebuild. They gave guys like Karlsson Burns Kane Vlasic all locked down long term to big contracts that no one wants. So they would actually have to package them out to even get the deals done at the end of the day for the most part and see if they can get the team to CBO (for example, teams like Boston, Ottawa, Detroit and Toronto would gladly take on a pick and one of those guys t buy out). The sharks are in a pickle because for so long they’ve been trading picks and prospects that their pool isn’t that great, so guys like Couture, Hertl, Meier and Labanc if they wanted to move them would get them those picks, probably Karlsson, but Burns, Vlasic, Jones and possibly Kane would need a buyout (though someone may take Kane over the other 3)

I agree the Sharks can't really rebuild and if they had better 🥅-tending they probably wouldn't have to think about rebuilding in the first place. SJ should offer a 1st round pick for NYR's Georgiev.

Regardless, they can’t really get better with the contracts they have. Like you said, a goalie won’t help, and with the looks of a CBO, Georgiev will remain NY. They could look to Murray, but as long as Karlsson, Burns, Vlasic, Jones, Couture, Hertl, Kane, Meier are still there, they can never truly rebuild. They quite literally have to suck it up and wait out the contracts
