IMO, standing pat is the right move if the cap stays flat. Give your young guys 1 or 2 year bridge deals and hope that everything goes back to normal next year.

Your AHL team is right next door; you can milk the cap early on with a 20-man roster and then go ahead with call-ups when they really need it.

I would prefer to give Johnsson away and then have 3 players making 3.4m total and have a real lineup. Korhov/Spezza for about 1.9m then a 1.5 Dman. Sure as heck, you HAVE to carry a 7th Dman.

. The Leafs are on the road half the time, as are the Marlies so players are often not next store If you need a call up due to minor injuries or illness (not LTIR), having no cap is really unmanageable.

I don't say that you have to have a 20-man roster all year. The idea is to milk the cap early on and do a similar thing with Spezza as Carolina did with JWilly. If you're really desperate for space due to injuries, do something like what Washington did with Chandler Stephenson where they dealt him to Vegas for a mid-round pick.

Sort of. There are rules in place to rescue teams from having to play without a full lineup. A team only has to play 1 game with a reduced lineup, technically 19 skaters including the backup goalie, before you can call up AHLers with the only time limit being the health of players. It would involve a lot of juggling but its far from unmanageable.
