Not sure if Toronto in the real world wont do that trade. ! million bucks for a very solid D. They have I think only 4 guys signed next year and 2 rookies. Benning is an upgrade on Holl and Maricin for sure. They will be looking for help and cant afford a number 1 D. It will be by committee next year. Not a good year for UFA D

"No use for Benning"? The only righties they have under contract for next season are Justin Holl, the as-yet untried Timothy Liljegren and absolute rookies. They would probably jump at this trade even without the retention. At worst, they get a #3 RD and a third-round draft pick for an expendable forward.

I don't hate the trade as is, but they wouldn't do it without retention. Benning's a fine 3rd pair D, but he's not anything more than that. They can't afford to be paying bottom of the lineup guys that much. Ideally, they go after a RHD who is clearly better than anyone they have, thus pushing the others down.
