Devils 20-21 Roster prediction

Created by: zyyyp
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 11, 2020
Published: Apr. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Added some veterans to help develop the young guys, Schneider buyout is bittersweet but needed to be done. Finally get rid of the headache that is Miles Wood at the draft, while adding some more picks to the cupboard (nice to get a 2nd back in 2020). Likely another rough season in NJ but Smith's rookie season along with the addition of Dadonov keeps us interesting. Having a legitimate backup goaltender would help keep us afloat.

Like the Khudobin signing

You could get Bratt for less if it's a four-year deal but yeah, if he becomes a top6 player and NJ don't have any cap issues

Barberio is nothing more than a 7th D. Go get a real top4 LD instead so your goalies have a defense

As you said " Finally get rid of the headache that is Miles Wood ", Bruins don't want Wood at all. We just got Ritchie and Wood is signed for two more years at $2,75M. Too much for a 4th liner.

You even called him a headache but you think you can get a 2nd rounder for him, of a team that has no 1st tears of joy

Bruins and Devils have made some good deals (for both sides) at trade deadline; see Stempniak & Johansson. So let's keep that trend and make a good deal, not like this one incl. Wood wink #PalmieriToBostonAtNextTDL

hahah, appreciate the feedback my man. I feel like we're not in a position to add multiple big name FA's, still rebuilding and have a fair ways to go!
a weaker blue line helping us get another relatively high pick wouldn't be the worst thing for us. as for the Wood trade, I feel like he's overvalued by teams because of his physicality and his bite, can have a scoring touch at times and has 2 years left so felt like a late 2nd would be okay but you're right it's wishful thinking. mainly just wanted to get a 2020 2nd back and we don't have a whole lot to sell off. I wanted Palmieri gone at the last deadline! going to get far less value for him next season.

It will be the last year of his contract, so he'll be a rental. if we moved him last deadline someone would've had him for this year and next on a pretty cheap deal

A bit less but if Palmieri is having a great season, NJ can get a 1st, 2nd/3rd and roster player/prospect. Prices at TDL have been higher and higher every year

I think Wood is overpaid, but he is the only Devil left who brings any physicality; if you look at hits Coleman and Simmonds are still 1st and 2nd. McLeod and Hayden bring some but who knows if they play a regular role next year. I just don't think the Devils should trade him unless a team blows them away.

not sure if you watched many Devils games this year my man, "physical" is one of the last words I would use to describe his play. takes a million dumb penalties and he has 0 puck skills whatsoever, bull in a china shop every time he touches the puck. couldn't make a sharp turn to save his life, and the majority of what he does on the ice is head scratching. sorry but I'm perfectly okay with him never playing another game in a Devils jersey.

I agree that NJ fans want to get the most out of assets while their value is as high as it can get (Wood about 2 months ago and Palms), and a 2nd round pick is a bit of wishful thinking. As a fellow Devils fan I wonder what you would think of my hypothetical here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1690196

Palms seems like a solid locker room/on ice guy. Trading him at the deadline for assets seems like a great idea while his value is high, but he is a leader for a young Devils team. Keeping him, and possibly resigning him, only benefits the progression of younger players.

I would hope the front office pays (or overpays) D men with certain D men capable of playing top 4 minutes to make up for PK’s turnover friendly game and/or bottom 4 pairing guys to let Smith and Butch develop their offensive side while sheltering their minutes.

Khudobin is a nice signing, but maybe a bit too much money for a back up if they really believe in Big Mac as a starter.

But I’m glad we both agree on NOT resigning Mueller.

yeah man yours is good, I would love to see us get Holtz in the draft. not sure on Dell as the Sharks had some of the worst goaltending in the league last year. A little too much youth in your bottom 6, they would have some difficulties I would imagine. Holtz probably needs another year or 2 in the SHL before coming over as well. Our blue line is horrendous but I don't think one FA is fixing it unfortunately, signing bigger name FA's seems a bit aimless. My thinking on Khudobin is that he had real good numbers last year and Devils likely have to overpay on all free agents right now, not the most attractive franchise to play for currently. I think what you're hoping for in 20-21 is some good growth out of Nico + Hughes + Smith + Bratt, being a touch more competitive with a real backup and yes definitely no more Mueller hahaha.

Basing his physciality off hits for NJ; Coleman is first with 166, then Simmonds 128, then Wood with 102.

I quess it just comes down to a difference of opinions, I like Wood's play and really liked the bottom line with Wood -Rooney - Mcleod/ Anderson. Wish he wasn't paid close to 3 million but the Devils have plenty of cap room, plus I would rather keep Wood and not see Foote or Kuokkanen be forced into playing a bottom 6 role like Boqvist was this season.
