If there is a CBO question

Description
Didnt really bother to update the roster below cause I'm just asking a question... if there is a CBO, I think the 4 candidates from CBJ would be Dubinsky, Foligno, Wenny, and Atkinson (would be dumb but i could see why). Foligno and Atkinson wont happen and I think Dubi is gonna LTIR. That leaves Wennberg, however, his contract is not an anchor (imo hes only overpaid by 2M and probably wont regress from where he is now) and he is a very easy buyout.

That brings me to think.. what if we traded for a bad contract to CBO? For example, we could take Jones from SJS to CBO while they CBO Vlasic, and they would send us picks back. SJS isnt the perfect partner but I could see them valuing the need to compete again and sign UFAs over the need to Tampas first round pick. I'm sure the Islanders have a few they'd love to buyout. Or we could take Gourde and CBO him if Tampa CBOs Johnson. Edmonton and Chicago have a few bad contracts too. Just an idea. Personally I think if we could manage another first + b prospect or mid level pick in exchange for taking a player to CBO, I would do it. Use a regular buyout on Wenny all you want, but his buyout is nearly irrelevant to I'd think the FO would not worry too much about it.

Thoughts?

What do you mean? And what contracts are worse?

I like your idea of trading for a contract and buyout. You are correct in that Foligno and Atkinson are untouchable. It would have been Dubi, but if they can LTIR him, then all the better. I could see them either keeping Wennie and Unprotecting him for expansion draft, or trying to trade him for a single mid-round pick. They would only do it if Foudy comes along and either Texier or Foudy can handle at least 3C duty. I could then see them trading for a buyout candidate to stock up on picks. They have been so depleted lately in picks. Their young guns from the recent drafts are really starting to flow into the pipeline...Texier, Bemstrom, Stenlund, Lilja, Peeke, Gavrikov, etc. Next up will be Foudy, Marchenko, Berni, and a few others here real soon. Also look at Bjorkstrand. I would put the over/under on him for 35-40 goals here real soon. The future is bright. Draft & develop.

Columbus wouldn’t buyout Folingo... he’s the team captain. That would kill the locker room.

Exactly. I could see why someone could make a case for him or Atkinson, but the team would never ever do it. If that makes sense

I wonder if a team would be allowed to do a CBO on a guy they trade for... does anyone know if it would be possible?

you clearly don't know much about CBJ.

This is a half baked idea.
CBJ is a team that barely, if at all makes a profit.
They aren't going to trade to bring someone in to CBO for draft picks.
If they would even considering buying people out they would have already done Dubi but they don't because on LTIR insurance will pay like 80% of that contract and they won't be responsible for the financials on it.

While this team wants to be competitive, they realize they have to build up like any small market team does. Draft well, be reasonable on the FA choices, and not pretend they have financial aspects like NY, MTL, TOR, or CHI.

I was going to say the same thing. I just don't see Priest or McConnel Jr. being okay with spending money on a buyout to acquire a draft pick.

"You clearly dont know much about CBJ" yeah **** off mate. Carolina just bought Marleaus contract for a first. It's not out of the realm of possibility. Crazier things have and will happen. No need to be a dick.

dude, most people who are familiar with CBJ understand what I said.
If you had ever even gone to a CBJ game you would know this. This is not a team that makes revenue. Has huge gate sales, etc....
Their biggest home crowds are probably when the penguins show up and the crowd has a very large percentage of penguins fans to the point that they start chants for the penguins.

So jump off your high horse. CBJ is doing great work there and trying hard. But there are some serious realities to the team there.
National Hockey League operating income by team 2018/19 season
https://www.statista.com/statistics/193744/operating-income-of-national-hockey-league-teams-in-2010/
CAR was a + 3.6 million.
CBJ was 3rd from the bottom with - 13 million.
Unless you have your head shoved halfway up your backside, you can figure out that teams losing 13 million a season aren't bringing players in to buy out.
They don't have the revenue to do that.

Notice other CBJ fans get that. And he's right to believe that.
