Leafs looking NICE

Description
In the trade with NSH, the Leafs get exactly what they need in a young, defensive RHD with Fabbro. Only way they can get him is if can also move out Turris as a cap dump. I know Turris hasn't shown great, but if you have Matthews and Tavares both playing almost 20 min a night, how much do you really need out of the guy? He's a good pro, has good hockey sense and can probably still put up 0.5ppg. It just hasn't worked out in NSH and they're looking to dump him.

Nashville gets a more favourable and younger 3C in Kerfoot, get some cheaper top 6 scoring than they'd find in free agency with Johnsson and still get a solid young D back in Dermott who can slot in their 2nd or 3rd pair comfortably.

Think Liljegren still has at least another year to become a full time NHLer. I suggest they target a veteran D like Hainsey, Mike Greene, Polak, etc. under 2.3M on a 1 year deal (not block Liljegren for 2021-2022) to play 3rd pair with Sandin. If a guy like TVR, Hamonic. Demelo or Braun's agent balk in FA, maybe they'd consider a cheap 1 year prove it to play for the Leafs (like Shattenkirk did).

Engvall's extension is kinda counter-productive, as he was sent down to make the Leafs fit in the cap. I wonder if Marleau would come to back to Toronto considering his relationship with Matthews and Marner.

If NSH would work with a deal surrounding this I'd love for that to be done (don't follow nsh but fabbro is supposed to be a defensively solid top4 young dman with potential offensive upside right?). Also with regards to the cap space, nice

i mean, you left out the part where Ron Hainsey (and to a lesser degree Roman Polak) are terrible and bad and would hurt the leafs more than help them so any signing of them, especially at that much money, would be laughably terrible and they'd be better letting liljegren work through issues at the NHL level

Yeah Fabbro seems like he can fit the bill of with exactly the leafs need. He's strong defensively, but still has the offensive skills to be poised, make a good first pass and join the rush.

Not really sure on the UFA D market for this year, anyone on a 1-2 year deal under 2.3M could work.

Nashville takes that and runs. They don’t want Turris and Fabbro May not pan out the way they want

That's true. I just don't think a wannabe contender can afford to have two young D making mistakes based from watching them both play with the Leafs this year. They both will be good NHL defenseman, but I think Sandin looked more comfortable in the NHL than Liljegren. Let Sandin play and find him a partner on the bottom pair, and let Liljegren marinate in the AHL until he's ready.

If both are ready to play and it won't impede the Leafs on ice output, all the power to them. Can use the money to sign Mikheyev to a higher AAV on a long term deal.

You forgot the part where Ron Hainsey is like a +11 playing on the Senators and mostly starting in the defensive zone on Faceoffs

wow, +/-, i can't believe there are people who still use that as an individual metric.
Now, let's check out every other defensive metric that exists......oh.....oh dear.....poor Ron, i didnt know he died.

He's bad, real bad. He'd be bad at league min and he's a running gag at 2+ million. Tell ya what though, since the sens like him so much i hope they sign him for a nice cheap contract for a long time so the leafs can play against him 6 times a season.

Whatever gets the Leafs to lose in the 1st round is fine by me. Better than to miss the playoffs of course

yep, Ron Hainsey the missing piece, the leafs totally made it out of the first round when he was there, and younger, and not a total liability

Take out the 2nd and the retention on Turris, and NSH still says no. Fabbro is way too important to NSH's future, the Preds are taking on way too much salary here, and they're not receiving anything of need. Johansson and Kerfoot are redundant pieces, when NSH already has Jarnkrok and Sissons locked up for significantly less. Dermott in no way replaces Fabbro in the top 4.
