Drafting Lafreniere in front of the home crowd would be a huge win for the Canadiens, but what would be the price?

Throwing **** at the wall, lets see what sticks.

MTL gets a cap dump, a 2C until Poehling/Suziki can take over, and move up at the draft.

Constructive. Jesus yours is a dumb comment.

1. this is just brainstorming, I qualify it above.

2. Where do you see a failure in the evaluation?
- Alzner level cap dump is worth a 1st. As seen in Backes/Marleau and a million times before.
- Moving up at the draft is expensive, would easily be cost more than a 2nd to move up to #1OA
- Tierney is worth 2nd+

Seriously you would have to give away all your young core to get the 1st overall pick. What do you think Crosby was worth when he was young. I bet Lafreniere scores 10 more goals than anyone on your whole team playing on crappy Ottawa next year. That kid is a superstar.

Thinking there's going to be a crowd for the draft seems naive that this point and people are trading with DET which fine they have 18.5% chance for winning lottery but truthfully OTT has the better chance currently with both picks in top 3. I do think you are under estimating how much it costs to move up to #1 in today's NHL

I was trying to make it somewhat realistic, both in a sense of what MTL would be willing to give up and what OTT would be willing to accept. Yes moving to #1OA is expensive, but having #2OA to offer is a great starting point.

Ok.. just going to break down your trade above though OTT gives you Tierney who is likely worth a 2nd+3rd at least based on AA trade at the deadline so that leaves OTT giving up the 1st overall pick for a cap dump, KK and #2OA.

Sorry but KK with his current value which would be reduced by Alzner cap dump (which good luck trying to get OTT to pay) isn't even close to moving up to #1OA

You'd be looking at like Suzuki, Primeau, 2020 #2OA and 2021 1st round. There's a reason #1 pick rarely get traded especially when its a highly touted player like Laf the price is just too high

Alzner's true cost is lower, so Melnyk wouldnt be offput, he has to get up to the cap floor. Kotkaniemi is still a high pedigree player.

Ill increase MTL's picks to 1st + 2nd + 2nd

When the team who gets the #1OA pick doesn't have to trade that pick. You can take fair price and actual value and throw it out the window because they can ask what ever they want for that pick. So thinking Ottawa is going to trade you the #1OA for 1 of the biggest cap dumps in the NHL and a center that about half of Montreal's fan base no longer wants you are in for a rude awakening.

So to move from 2nd overall to 1st overall you're giving up KK, dumping Alzner and giving up a 2nd rounder?

That's a horrible deal for MTL. Lafreniere is good but he is not Crosby, McKinnon or McDavid good. MTL wouldn't be willing to give up KK in this deal either, another prospect sure but not his high of a caliber one.

Most commenters are saying that its not enough to move from 2 to 1.

The price to take a dump contract like Alzner is a 1st. Tierney is worth a 2nd + 3rd.

So essentially the price to move up from 2 to 1 is: upgrading the 3rd to a 2nd and the added value of KK's draft pedigree compared to a general "1st"
