Have it now down to 2 Trades

Created by: Sagecoll
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 13, 2020
Published: Apr. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) Pretty simple trade for Colorado. Jost + Zadorov will combine next year to make ~ 5 mil. Strome will also make ~ 5 mil. Strome easily slides into the 2nd line RW alongside Kadri and Bura, where he should be good for like 55 points (70 points with Panarin, 40 points with Jimmy Vesey, I'll say Kadri is right in the middle there) and at RW as opposed to C, his defense is much better. Also allows Donskoi to bounce down to 3rd line to play with Compher and Nichushkin and Cavert/PEB/Kaut round out the lineup. Zadorov was slated to make ~3 mil next year regardless of length as a basically 7D, Avs get out of that entirely. Hajek gives them an LHD fill in with some upside (much like Ryan Graves was 2 years ago) in case anyone goes down - essentially same role that Timmons is playing.

2) Trouba trade is all about need. Chicago needs an RHD and more size and physicality in their own end. Trouba is all of those things. Cost of re-signing Saad will prob be in that 7-8 mil range which makes this about cap neutral for Chicago and ultimately with Kubalik most likely signing long term this offseason would be tough to manage. Kubalik, Kane, Debrincat, Nylander round out the top 6 wingers, Boqvist is able to avoid top line matchups which he wasn't quite ready for yet and continue developing.

Nashville needs Winger help particularly if at least one of Smith/Granlund are going to walk. Saad plays a quick but controlled style that fits the Preds really well. Duchene comfortably looks like the 1C now, Bonino was able to basically step into a 2C role after Hynes came in and Tomasino shouldn't need much more time. Johansen was forced to play with some bottom 6 hustle wingers to try and get him to move his legs more, and it seems like his issue is more mental. Really good change of scenery candidate.

Two things... one Johansson is way over paid and I’d rather keep a younger trouba than him. Everyone has said that both nils and miller will start in ahl

2 things. one ryan strome is not a 55 point player. panarin absolutely carried him to 70 points this year. 2: how does a 2nd line winger equate to: top 4 dman in zadorov and young center... hajek isnt projected to be anything special. this is a terrible trade for colorado.

Well in a couple ways you're right. Strome...is a product of his linemates. For better or worse. This isn't a hard experiment to do. Go back to almost any year of Strome's career, take his 2 most common linemates, average out their point rate, and that is usually Strome's point rate. This year for example, Panarin was at a 113 point pace, Fast was at 34. That combines to 73, Strome was 69. So yes, Strome is being constantly carried (much like his brother), but with good linemates that's actually great...and that's what we're looking at in Colorado. Kadri played at a 58 point pace this year, Bura was at 64. I'd bet on a line with those 2, Strome yeah ends up around 55. And playing at Wing, he should have good defense to match. That makes him a top 6 player.

Framing Zadorov as a top 4 dman is pretty laughable. He was a healthy scratch for Kevin Connauton this year and comfortably slots behind: Johnson, Makar, Cole, Girard, Graves and Byram this year. That puts him as a 7D. And paying 3mil for a 7D, I think you'd agree, is a terrible idea.

    So looking at ability:
    Strome >>> Jost
    Hajek << Zadorov

    Cap hit:
    Strome <<< Jost
    Hajek >>> Zadorov

    Age
    Strome <<< Jost
    Hajek >> Zadorov

Seems even at worst, and frankly most Ranger fans turn this deal down.

Yeah, if the CBO gets allowed.

But Seabrook would be the 7th d-man anyway, so that wouldn't change anything.

hard pass, no one wants Strome and that trap of a next contract. Hes taking his 1 year Arb deal and going to get way too much to skew his value.

you've made your Strome feelings known whenever there's an opportunity lol

Though, not sure how a player slated to be making about 1 mil more than Donskoi (should probably note that Donskoi has never broken 40 points and he spent last year with Evander Kane AND Tomas Hertl, the year before that his most common linemate was Pavelski, the year before that - Couture lol) is going to be much of a trap.

It's not really about cutting cap. All of these deals are actually pretty cap neutral. It's more positional. Trouba is a 1RHD on like 12 teams in the league. Chicago is one of them, he gets the role there the Rangers envisioned when they signed him before they realized that Fox and Deangelo were both other-worldly offensive players.

And I think Jost is fine as a solid 3C. It's really about trading down in offensive ability to get younger and more team control.

he has arb rights and is coming off a over inflated point season, hes goign to go for the 1 year Arb deal that pushes him to UFA,
    Thats why its a trap

Its always funny, lots of strome is so great yet every rangers fans are tryign to move him...why. Thats right bc hes goign to have a terrible contract bc he hit a cash cow playing with panarin this year

Nashville probably don't want an overpaid Saad...extended. Trouba isn't worth being paid as a top 5 Dman. Although not lover of Johansson and his contract, Nashville needs him at centre instead of winger Saad.

tbh i have no idea what he's going to go for. On his 4th team by that point, he just got married, he's probably looking to ink a long term deal. It's the Rangers who have pushed the 1 year deal on him like they did Kevin Hayes.

Though, even if he doesn't sign long term, I think you can parlay that into your favor. You most likely can't get a 1st for Jost right now. But for Strome at the deadline, that's probably on the table, especially given his history playing C.

I don't think any of these contract situations are great. All 3 players are overpaid. It's about the positional adjustments. And Nashville needs wingers...badly. Their 2nd best Winger under contract for next season is.... Arvidsson.

Agree with most...Not interested in Jost, Zadorov or Johansen. A mix of crap and overpaid/underproducing.

Strome will find a home somewhere and make more money than he’s worth to be disappointing to a fan base...hopefully that somewhere is not NY. I’d try to package him with another asset, maybe Carolina’s first rounder, for something younger that can score goals in a middle 6 role. I’d “overpay” to do it just to avoid getting sucked into another long term with him.

I think hes going to get close to a 6m 1 year deal which will be dumb bc he is goign to just trap a team with in a tough spot. He has a chance to make a dumb contract in UFA if he bets on himself and taking the 1 year Arb deal.

Team wont want to sign him long term right now either, so he could burn them twice....earn too much in an arb deal, under preformed and then walk.

    Too risky IMO

The estimate for a 1 year deal for Strome is 4.15 mil.

For that price, you most likely sign him, try to negotiate throughout the year:

-if you can get him for around 5 mil long term, you prob sign him
-If you can't, you deal him around the deadline for around a 1st.

I think most would agree that getting him to be a 50 point player OR getting a 1st for him by next year is a safer bet than betting on Jost becoming a top 6 player...

what makes you think burakovsky comes back and has a 60 point pace? this was his best year by far and could be his best year of his career. I highly doubt he replicates 19.2% shooting percentage since his career average without that year is... 12.88 thats a huge difference. he could easily just as well have a 35 point season. he also never completes a season, always has some sort of injury. I like kadri, but if kadri is the best player on your line strome isnt going to be anything more than what donskoi would bring them. I 100% would see the av's dealing ian cole before moving on from zadorov. you dont just give away 6'6 defenders. Jost is 21 years old. you try and sell high on both guys not trade for a guy coming off a career year and a depth dman. zadorov on most teams is top 4. colorado is lucky to have a very deep dpool. timmins and byrum are both not even on the team that pool is incredibly deep. that being said. zadorov would get traded for a real 2nd line rw. not strome.

    A lot to address here.
    1) Burakovsky this season even if you subsitute his goal/60 with his career average goals/60 still has Burakovsky coming out with a 54 point pace lol. The analytics bode well for a similar performance next year.
    2) Again, Donskoi hasn't eclipsed 37 points with consistent linemates like Kane, Hertl, Pavelski and Couture. Strome had Panarin and a 4th liner and was on a 70 point pace. It's a major offensive upgrade and a 50+ point pace is to be expected.
    3) I would much rather Cole than Zadorov. Are you saying I could just trade for him instead? Cuz that would be awesome. You don't really seem like an analytics guy to be saying that:
    Screen-Shot-2020-04-14-at-3-05-38-PM

If you think you could get a real 2nd line RW with just Zadorov, that'd be awesome for you guys. I think around a 3rd rounder is closer to actual value. And judging by a lot of the other proposals here...so does everyone else.

Pageau just signed 5m aav abd strome is our producing him. 1 year of control difference, he’s not signing in the 4m range. He’s asking way more than that and arbs will favour his side

Id rather keep Jost and trade Zadorov for picks. More cap-friendly.

Avs have no use for Hajek and I dont trust Stromes production

You don't really seem like an analytics guy to be saying that:

im not saying just zadorov im saying hes easily a top 4 dman on a team that isnt stacked defensively. im not an av's fan. but this trade is laughable. burakovsky hasnt finished a full 82 game season without some kind of injury. his best season in terms of health was last year (contract year) and when he was 20 only missing 3 games... he just doesnt stay healthy was the point i was getting at. you wont ever get a 60 point season out of him. im not saying donskoi is anything special hes essentially a 3rd line winger. but strome has needed elite talent his entire career to pull him and panarin is the first one who has been able to do so. I dont think you get anything of real value for strome. that being said, if im the av's gimme the pick over strome.

tbd. though i doubt he actually goes to arb. I think he'd take a show-me deal.
