Bergevin Gets a Backup

Created by: OnTheBoard
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 14, 2020
Published: Apr. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
St. Louis needs to make room to sign Pietrangelo. Bergevin acquiring Allen is a much simpler route than trying to sign a Lehner/Raanta/Greiss backup on July 1st. Similar to what we saw when MTL acquired Joel Armia. WPG needed space to lock up key pieces on their blue line. Bergevin took on Steve Mason's contract (who was bought out), a draft pick, and Joel Armia who is now one of their best top-nine forwards. Allen is coming off a strong season in St. Louis where he boasts a .927 SV % through 21 games. It is clear that Binnington is the guy for the Blues, who also have decent backup options in their minor league systems including Ville Husso. Allen will have every motivation in the world to perform at his best in a contract year while backing up Carey Price.

Allen and 3rd? Yeah sure, I'd be ok with that. All the UFA's Habs would target would probably want 2 years min in the 2-4M range anyway so getting a 3rd back would be worth it IMO.

Jake Allen isn't a cap dump; he's a four-million-dollar goalie worth every penny. Armstrong would say, That dance card, and YOU want ME to give YOU a draft pick? How about Allen for my second back and Michael McNiven?

You spend $40 million on 4 forwards and get bounced in the 1st round every year

Very fair, but you need to remember that other teams would be willing to spend top dollar on a #1 d-man like Pietrangelo. Armstrong is going to need all the cap space he can get.

True, but Pietrangelo probably wants to stay in St Louis and Armstrong is going to do everything he can to keep him happy. And Allen is a pretty valuable commodity. For example, I can see Las Vegas wanting to add him to replace Lehner or even Washington to replace Holtby, despite their own cap woes. Then there's the Islanders, Detroit, the western Canada teams (exc Vancouver), maybe Ottawa, and others.

I know more then likely Armstrong will need to move both Allen and Bozak, If he wants to resign Alex Pietrangelo.

hey at least we be making the playoffs without the need for a 10mill goalie. Sure price deserved the contract at the time. But now that contract is like an anchor dragging the team down to reality that overpaying goalies may come back to bite the team. He will be 38 when that contract is done and habs better pray he can play alright by then.

Fair trade. I don’t have too much confidence in Allen, but at least if he doesn’t work out it’s only for one year, and we still got a 3rd.

“Dragging the team down”? Maybe in 21-22, but right now I don’t see a glaring need for cap space in Montreal.

Plus Carey is more important off the ice to this team than any idiot that sh*ts on him can understand.

I got nothing against price I just feel overpaying goalies just does not work. I feel the NHL should implement a goalie contract system which sets the standards for what a goalie should be paid based on certain criteria. Rn there are no rules for it and its a mess. My idea starters should get around 5-9.5 mill at most as it seems 10mill is just a cursed number for them.

If the system is introduced correctly we should see better results from goalies and their contracts should be more reasonable

Allen is overpaid, everyone knows that. As long as the habs have the cap space for him, it doesn’t matter how much he costs. Only narrow-minded fools would look at the number $15 million, with out actually thinking about the circumstances of the team that has the goalies.

My theory on goaltenders.... You need your number 1 to win enough games to get you to the playoffs.... You need your number 2 to play .500 hockey.... dont care about how many games each plays.... But once the playoffs start just pray your goalie gets hot.... No need to over pay for a back up since when it matters he doesnt play! Spend the cap somewhere else.

I’m sure Bobrovsky will see to GMs being more cautious when signing goalies. But you can’t have rules that goalies can’t be paid as much as other players. And even if you think goalies shouldn’t make more than $9.5 million, Price is only overpaid by a million dollars. Which is 1.2% of the salary cap, and absolutely something the habs can afford to sign their franchise player.

No matter how you think backups should be used (of which I definitely disagree with you), it doesn’t make sense to have someone like Charlie Lindgren on your roster. And when you get someone that might be better than him AND a 3rd round pick, you jump on that. And how many times do you need to be told, the habs have the cap space! They’re not going to spend it on anything else, so might as well use it. Even if Allen is horrible, and turns into another Kinkaid, you end up with a 3rd round pick and the only thing you gave up was something you weren’t going to use anyways. If the habs have another move that improves their team more than Allen, but takes up their cap space, by all means go ahead and don’t do this trade. But if the cap space is just sitting there collecting dust, use it.

And if you’re going to try to argue that the habs could just go out and sign more free agents, you need to know that this is real life, not a video game. You don’t just go out signing people for the sake of signing them, and not thinking about how each piece fits in to your organization. Plus there’s real factors of whether players want to sign here, and whether they fit into the situation.

Blues definitely pass. We have enough borderline NHL players and we're confident someone will pay for Allen, even if it's a 3rd/4th round pick, after his strong year. Teams like WSH, SJ, BUF could all use a goalie.
