well that's cap relief, but it doesnt give toronto anything they really need while destroying their NHL bottom 6 depth that they really need to use to upgrade their D

Dubas would disagree with "destroying the bottom-6", they still have quite a few pieces. The point of this proposed trade is giving Toronto some inexpensive assets(Simon/Riikola) while giving them the cap space to acquire a RHD they desperately need. Unless they move Nylander instead, 2 of Kapanen/Johnsson/Kerfoot will probably have to go.

Okay so the issue with things like this is that the Leafs don't need cap space just to have it. They need to allocate it elsewhere. By trading some of their most viable trade pieces with the sole purpose of creating cap space, you're taking away from their ability to address their needs.

Ottawa isn't going anywhere, and they have cap space.
They are the perfect destination for a cap dump.

That’s a lot to give up for those 2 pieces, though they both are really good players who’d fit in nicely. I like the third pairing. Soucy is decent & Roy has been off the charts playing a top 4 role with Martinez. He will probably get a solid raise though

I don't think a Tor/Pit trade is the best option for both sides, just trying to work out a viable option. I get it, it's way easier to trade some of the pieces mentioned directly for the RHD. But I took a circuitous route because Pit really can't spare Letang/Marino to help Toronto's RHD prob. You're very right.

tell the Toronto fans; they're going ballistic.
I thought of Riikola/Simon because they're inexpensive depth pieces and good corsi players.
Roy/Soucy's puck possession/offence for stats look surprisingly good. I think you had Roy a while back (stick tap). Just trying to think of other 3rd pairing options.

Dubas is an analytical wizard so he’d love both guys. I did acquire Roy once, his numbers are really good.

If the leafs trade their two best bottom 6 players, including their only 3c option for a bunch of guys who are not filling those holes, or other spots (ie right d) than yes, their bottom 6is basically destroyed. Trading them just for cap space would make the team much worse

Cap space to fit the #1RHD which they desperately need.
The way their team is designed it will be top heavy. the big-4 forwards, the top 2-3 D, and the #1 goalie take up most of the salary cap. They can trade an big-4 forward, or a chunk of offensive depth. Or go with a substandard D core, keep their exorbitant offensive depth, and have no "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup"--which I am totally fine with.

Oh? Which 1 rhd is that? Do they have have one waiting for the cap space? Because unless they do 100% have one lined up they're taking a massive risk making the team worse for maybe.
I know how the team is built, but i also know you never bank on UFA or future trades when making trades today

Why do so many think the Leafs are so desperate to get cap relief? Look around at other teams would get reasonable even sign their own RFAs....they are the will real cap problems.
Sorry to inform hockey fans, the Leafs are not "desperate need" of a # RHD. The fact that the the two worse Dmen the Leafs had last year will be no longer LeafsBarrie and Ceci,..... improves the Leafs considerably.

Ask Dubas.
Tor/Pit aren't the best trading partners, I get it.
Toronto is constructed incorrectly.
Don't burn down London.
Chill.
Period.

The Leafs may or may not be desperate to get a #1RHD. Most think they should be. Taking away two NHLers(even if bad) and replacing them with AHLers won't necessarily solve the problems. Maybe I'm wrong, but IMHO, Toronto won't be a contender until their team defence majorly improves. I think they'll have to sacrifice some depth offense for some D help. Just my opinion.

I mean, dubas didn't make a trade proposal that makes no sense for his own team, you did.
You can just say you didnt really consider Torontos actual needs past cap space and be done with it
Just because your logic approaching a team is incorrect doesn't mean people are worked up.

The leafs RHD next time will be so bad. I agree they won’t accept the trade but don’t think losing Barrie is “addition by subtraction”. He’s still by far their best RHD. ceci stinks though

Why would Pittsburgh do that?

Bjugstad is fine, just injured. Johnson isn't that bad (people really just need to accept that). Giving up Hallander and a 2nd is simply unnecessary.
