Habs offseason moves if I was GM

Description
What I think Bergevin should do to at least make the playoffs next season and make the team better for the future.

First off sign a backup goaltender. Here I've put Halak since he already played here, people in Montreal loved him and to a similar cap hit that he have now I think he could accept to come here. If he decide to resign in Boston I would like Greiss. Those two are probably the best backup in the league right now.

Kovalchuk may sign in Montreal for next season. Bonus would be added but the 1.5M is the base.

Trade with Philly:
Ghost would be on the first pair with Weber. He's a lefthanded offensive defenseman and Montreal really need one. His cap hit is reasonable and Philly accept to deal him to Montreal for Mete and an 2nd round pick instead of losing him in the Seattle expansion. Philly will likely protect Provorov, Sanheim and Myers in the process. Mete is more suited to play on the 3nd pair and he won't have the pressure to produce like in Montréal.
Plus the move allow to take some pressure of Romanov and he'll have to earn his time.

Trade with Winnipeg:
Winnipeg gets their second center and their top 6 will be scary. Domi is traded because Mtl has many center with the likes of Danault, Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Poehling. Domi is better suited for Winnipeg and the move allow either Suzuki and Kotkaniemi to have the job on the second line while Danault will come cheaper when he'll have to sign his next contract and he's an excellent two-way center.
Montreal gets Vesalainen who would play in Laval and the season after (2021-22) he will compete with Caufield for the second RW role. Plus they get the contract of Buff who likely won't play again but Montreal as enough cap space to absord the contract. Plus if there's a CBO Winnipeg could use it on Little and have Buff contract out so that allow them to make trades to get a better defense since Winnipeg would be a contender with Domi in their lineup.
I'm putting Byfuglien because their was something this season that he might still appears on the team cap hit even though he wasn't playing or something like that I don't remember but Winnipeg get rid of the contract if that's the case.

Pretty big overpayment for Domi. No team is going to offer you their top prospect and a 1st. Buff is terminating his contract so you can just remove him from the deal

In that case would you put Roslovic instead if you think it's a overpayment. I've put Vesalainen because he can play LW,RW but Roslovic can play RW (which is a need in Mtl)

I like Domi, but MTL is overvaluing his worth to other teams, imo. I could see in the case of WPG a 1st (probably late teens) and a prospect that is really good but not their top tier (read Vesalinen or Heinola) and maybe a bottom roster player to offset some of the salary they’d be taking on.

Is Vesa still considered a top prospect?
Even January's TSN top prospect list puts him outside the top 5 for Winnipeg. I know opinions are each their own but you may overvalue him a little also. For me here's an article that sums up what I think of Vesa; https://thehockeywriters.com/jets-vesalainen-top-prospect-tsn-snub/
To be fair I think he'll be a good middle 6 winger but not an explosive top line elite forward like people were apprehending after his 2017-18 season with HPK. Personally I wouldn't mind taking him in a trade but I feel like his ceiling is getting lower with each season passing (His decision to go back with Jokerit instead of staying in the AHL and learn the NA game really hurt his dev).

I mean it was but with Ylõnen and Caufield being in the system as natural RW, Suzuki, Evans and Hillis being natural centers but can play RW and Gallagher plus Armia being very good natural RW is there really a need to add another non-NHL ready prospect? There's a way bigger need in our LW pipeline as Fonstad (Most likely not signed) is our best prospect followed by Teasdale and RHP ... Those are our best natural LW, yes Poehling could be switched at LW but he isn't a top 6 winger either. Also (With Domi out) our top 2 LWs are turning 26 and 30 next season, not meaning that they're on the backend of their career by any mean but it's not like we could wait another 2-3 years before drafting or trading for prospects and then not rush them.

Well thank god you’re not GM.

And any issues about Byfuglien getting paid is in the past year. It has nothing to do with next year.

I've gotten numerous WPG Jets fans on here willing to pay that price..(Slightly altered - Habs would also take on Perreault's contract and send Weal back).... I think you may be stating your opinion more than what reality is. Agree on the Buff thing though.

Agreed RE: Veselainen.

He's not a top prospect. He's just a good prospect. Many sources don't have him in the top echelon of prospects around the league nor at the top of WPGs team level ranking so Im not sure where this idea that he is the next Laine is coming from. Once again, good prospect I do like him but he's not elite and pretty much a consensus to not even be WPG's top prospect or even potentially second best.

Domi is worth 1st and a good prospect any day of the week. You do not simply add a 24 year old proven 50+ point player with proven 70 point potential for scraps. Saying anything otherwise is bias. There are countless trades for players who have proven less than Domi has and gotten arguably almost as much.

That's kind of harsh, this is actually pretty good.

Only thing that is probably more unrealistic than not is Halak accepting 2.5M when I think everyone knows he would get more plus would not want to play second fiddle to Price..... yet again......

If MB did this, I'd be more than happy. (Swap Buff for someone like Perreault though for cap purposes)

I don't think Halak comes back to MTL on a contract like that. There are several other options that are better than Halak if you look at GSAx last year. Trade for Raanta or Allen if there teams want cap space. Sign Crawford or Khudobin if they are available. Halak would be my 5th option if those guys don't work out.

I also don't think we need to be trading Domi this year to make room for Suzuki and KK. First of all, Domi's value is probably lower than it was last year, waiting a year could boost his stock. Secondly, KK hasn't exactly shown he is ready for anything yet. I would make room for KK and Suzuki once we know we have a consistent top 6 C in one of them, which we can't really say for sure at this point.
