Only reason Armstrong would do this -- unless he's gone cuckoo -- is that he knew that he couldn't re-sign Pietrangelo.

And I was POSITIVE Pietrangelo was going to stay in St Louis. I wonder if this means that his mind is already made up -- and if so, where.

It means less money to keep Alex Pietrangelo. Moreover, St-Louis loses their 2021 4th round pick. 1 good new (scandella signing) brings 2 bad ones .

This is a large year for UFA defensemen.... There's a lot better than this out there. In a cap league, unfortunately the market is set for a lot of average defensemen getting a lot of money.

I'm not going to lie, Scandella was much better after leaving Buffalo. With that being said 4 years is still too long for him at that aav.

Definitely too long, but I don’t care, since the habs get a 4th.

Also Pietrangelo is definitely gone now. If the cap stays the same, they’re looking at about $2.5 million in cap space for 2 defensemen.

I think that Petro told Armstrong that he planned to leave/explore UFA last offseason. Every single move that he's made, including the Faulk sign-and-trade and the Scandella acquisition, seems to point in that direction. Unless he's agreed to a sweetheart extension and some cap-floor team agrees to take the Steen deal, I think that Petro was gone a long time ago. I think that he saw what happened to Columbus with Panarin and he wanted to avoid that fate.

Why didn't they wait until after October 7th? It's not like this contract is so good they had to rush to sign it...

This makes the Muzzin deal look like highway robbery.

My thoughts exactly.

Watch out for all of the "he'll take a $7M deal as a hometown discount" posts.

Is this a sign for contracts to come.
I don't know, I thought he would have pegged the 4 mil mark.
But he didn't. And he also signed with term. Which seems fairly odd.

It makes sense that the age 30+ guys want term. I'm expecting the age 26-29 guys to take the 1-2 year pacts, though.

This is a mistake.
And if he is the term replacement for Pietrangelo... oh man.

I like the Blias deal this is a dumb move.

I would agree with you there IF he was a forward. But of the older players in the league. You are looking at mainly defense men due to the crushing need. There are never enough.

St. Louis is a pretty damn good place for any veteran to play in RN. After being stuck in the losing hellhole known as Buffalo, not surprised that he jumped at the opportunity to extend long-term with the defending champs.

It seems like the Gardiner deal was the blueprint for this deal. Both contracts are backloaded and for good 2nd-pairing-caliber players. Again, as the defending Cup champs and a perennial top contender, I think their veteran players are willing to sacrifice some AAV that they could get on the open market in exchange for term.
