Hindsight 2012-13 Team

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 18, 2020
Published: Apr. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The 2012-13 postseason was just the most disappointing one ever as a Pens fan. It felt like we finally had a good team to win the cup yet we ended up choking again thanks to Dan Bylsma’s incompetent coaching. Overall the team did not have much of an identity under Dan plus they made way too many big moves during that deadline.

I don't know how you blame it on the coach. He can't go out there and play goalie.
Some of those goals were just embarrassing.

Wasn't it the lack of offense that costed them?

Yeah you are right, goaltending was trash. Still, it was Bylsma’s decision to play scrubs like Glass & Adams while benching Jokinen, Bennett & Kennedy.

Goaltending didn’t help, they gave up a bunch of soft goals especially Fleury but ultimately, the Pens didn’t have a game plan after the Bruins shut them down. They wanted to be a heavy physical offensive team but the Bruins easily outmatched them. The coach didn’t make any adjustments.

iginla turned out to be the trade deadline mistake although playing with sid instead of his off wing might have helped that. thanks Bylsma.

For the totality of Fleury's HOF career, He deserves positive recognition for being so great--most of the time. But no one is perfect and even Sid/Geno have slumps. Fleury's slumps came at the worst times though, and that's part of the reason the pens weren't really a Cup threat from 2010-2015. That's unfortunate, because that's when the Hawks/Kings had their mini-dynasties--and that's just what they were. If the Pens had sully (or someone like him) as coach, and if they had figured out the whole speed thing 5 years earlier, I would have loved to see the Pens mop the floor with the Kings(arguably the slowest team in the league) for sure, and I think they could have beaten the Hawks too. The pens could easily have 2-3 more cups if they didn't waste those prime Sid/Geno years. I do wish we had taken Toews over Staal also because then the hawks probably don't have their run of success. maybe they win a cup, but no way 3 without Toews. But that was the philosophy back then--(we need grit, toughness, size, physicality, enforcers, random stiffs who play 3 min and sit in th penalty box for 5, blah blah blah). just ridiculous. That philosophy sickened me honestly. Why did teams try to recreate the 70s flyers?

iginla turned out to be the trade deadline mistake although playing with sid instead of his off wing might have helped that. thanks Bylsma.

Meant he chose the wrong team

Yep I agree. I’m not sure if MAF is HOF caliber, but he’s definitely an elite player in his position & one of the best of this generation. Obviously he had a few playoff collapses, but the good he’s done outweighs the bad. I know the analytics say he’s prone to giving up soft goals but on a night when he’s on, he can steal you games. We got to see that many times throughout his career especially during the first 2 rounds of the 2017 playoffs. You’re one of the first guys I’ve come across who believes Fleury is good & is willing to give him credit. There’s this guy named @madchad412 & he always bashes Fleury on Twitter, says that he’s a below average goalie & that DeSmith is better than him.

I agree, if the Penguins figured out the speed part earlier, they could’ve won more cups. I tried to sorta implement that element in this team bringing in guys who can skate & have skill like Pominville, Cogliano & Bouwmeester. Was thinking about Gionta, St Louis & Grabner too. It definitely would’ve scared many teams. I think Vigneault would’ve made a great coach instead of Bylsma. He’s a bit more conservative than Sully when protecting a lead but still emphasizes that speed cycling game.

Regarding the last point, I share the same view. I refer to that era as the “tall dead tree defenseman era” where you had goons & teams were playing the boring trap game. Of course it was more physical, but overall, it wasn’t as entertaining or exciting as the speed & intensity of today.

I think because of Fleurys badly timed shortcomings, he is just a bit under appreciated in Pittsburgh in terms of talent. He is 5th all-time in wins, 6th in SV%, and 13th in GAA—al of this among goalies who have played 700 GMs or more and some of those played in lesser scoring eras. I think he has definitely accomplished enough to be in the HOF.
