Haula and Flat Cap with Dallas Trade

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 19, 2020
Published: Apr. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm still convinced that Erik Haula is the right move for Buffalo's second-line center spot, at least temporarily until the Sabres sort out the Cozns/Mittelstadt/other question.

Many of the signing figures are from Evolving Hockey; where mine vary, mine are higher.

I actually think one of Marco Rossi and Anton Lundell will be available at 7th overall.

I think Blake Comeau is good insurance against Mittelstadt not panning out, at least this coming season.

Miller has more value than that. We aren't trading Johansson. You would have enough cap space to keep him if that Dallas trade didn't happen. That 3rd line would get killed, none of those players have experience, only Cozens is NHL ready

some could even consider that an overpayment for miller. that guys production and value has dropped since coming to buffalo. Defenseman who get paid like him who sit in the pressbox most of the time are a red flag to most teams so they would be hesitant to offer that for him.

Totally agree about Haula, think Buffalo should pursue him in free agency, perfect stopgap until Cozens or Middlestadt can hopefully takeover the
2C job. If they have the cap space getting one of Namestnikov or Granlund would be good too.

Think they'd be better to keep Johansson though, you need a veteran winger to support a young center and he'd be the perfect guy to play the wing for Cozens or Middlestadt, can't run three youngsters on one line.

Trading Miller or Ristolainen for futures to free up cap space seems necessary at this point.

Yeah the trade proposed here is basically what they gave up to get him, I really don't see how he'd be worth anymore now.

I would say a late 2nd if buffalo gets lucky would be the highest a team would pay if they were desperate. but realistically a third and a depth wing would probs be his worth now.

Miller’s fallen out of favour with the Buffalo coaching staff but when he’s played, he’s shown promising signs. Looking at his stats, he is actually way better defensively than Tyson Barrie. Perhaps Dubas should’ve given up less to acquire him instead, or trade Kadri to get Manson.

to be fair kadri for barrie would have been fine if Babcock was not head coach. Toronto would have had a defenseman with possibly 12 goals and 50 assists. On top of that we got a third line center (kerfoot) as a throw in. Overall babcock tried to sabotage the acquisition and now he is gone good riddance.

Buffalo holds Johansson to the deadline and trades for futures. They definitely aren't takimg that deal.

When he's been in Miller has been solid. He was Buffalo's best RHD at the end of the season when they started playing him. Perfect pairing with Dahlin to help settle him down. More value keeping him right now. Better to get rid of Risto for anything.

Yep he is a highly underrated defenseman, that’s for sure. Dubas wishes that he traded for him instead.

Would Haula ever consider a 2 year deal at a higher cap hit?

Miller's production was down because he was being scratched in favour of guy's like Bogosian and Scandella early on in the season. When he was playing he was often on the 3rd pairing and getting the least amount of ice time, no PP time etc. Hard to produce when you don't get good opportunities. He showed his talent in the last 25 games, was our best D over that time

That's why I think he would still bring a second, with balancing nonsense.

I'd prefer to trade Ristolainen, too, but every time I do, half the Sabres fan base says the value I put on him means I don't know anything about hockey.
