not how the NHL Trades section works, bud. we generally reserve that for posting officially confirmed trades. casual speculation like this goes in either the general NHL sub-forum or a team-specific sub-forum, and don't try and disguise it by modeling the post name after the other posts in NHL Trades.

Subban got injured early in the 18-19 season. When he came back he wasn't quite the same. He was then traded to NJ and was still not quite the same. He is still a minutes mule, but he is not quite the offensive danger that he was before that injury. He is still solid defensively (NJ just blows) and basically the same physically. However, his pre-injury offensive production was clicking at basically over 0.7ppg, while his post-injury season and a half is at 0.3ppg. You can put some of that down to being in NJ, but that is nearly a 60% drop in offensive production.

That would be like Ovechkin getting a shoulder injury then only managing 20 goals the next two seasons. Yeah, that still ain't chopped liver, but it's not what you gave him the $9.35M contract for. Same with Subban. He fine, but he is not what he got the $9M contract for.

He is maybe more in line with Orlov now. $5M is okay, $9M is not.

NJ is at the bottom of the cap list so it is not even like they need to move the $9M hit. They do not really have much reason to move him. Due to their low team cap I am sure that they would be willing to retain, even 50%, but since they have no reason to move him it wouldn't be as a fire sale price.

They gave up two seconds (#34 and #37, so closer to Washington's 1sts than 2nds), a solid prospect and an AHLer to get him. A straight trade would probably cost similar, with retention would cost more. Due to Washington's 2nds being closer to #60s than #35s, straight trade would probably be two 2nds and a #5ish prospect. With retention would run a 1st, 2nd and top-5 prospect.
