That's a huge time overpayment for Ekblad. Were one of the few teams that can afford to cbo Bob

Florida decline, they can CBO Bob without trading away Ekblad.

Consider me surprised if NHL ever lets teams do such cap circumvention as this is...

Only realistic way I can see NHL allowing CBOs is if cap decreases significantly and the player bought out has been acquired before the trade deadline and have played at least one game for his team during that said season. Neither of those conditions add up here, making this extremely unlikely and just wishful thinking.

i agree I say teams can trade an extra contract out to be cbo'd by another team but the league should make it where neither team can resign said player. Usually in my proposals the leafs would go for a depth guy like (mayfield) take boychuck from the isles and cbo him. Beneficial for both teams as isles can then use their cbo on ladd giving them 11.5 mill to spend on barzel and Pulock

Beneficial maybe to teams, but not to players. I would imagine NHLPA not being pretty happy about getting the maximum amount of players bought out of their contracts. It would roughly stress the credibility of the contracts as they currently are... With the league and NHLPA already negotiating about potentially cutting player salaries, I wouldn't be too surprised to see a strike or another lockout year coming if they push things too far.

This is bad on so many levels

1- you dont sign spezza for more than 1 year. Not good cap management. yes i know it is buriable but those +35 contracts.
2- bobrovski is the reason that Flordia wasnt in the playoffs. Thier backup was playing all the games. Why would be take that garbage for 7 more years. Even if he rebounds, he is on the wrong side of 30. Youd have to pay me to take Bob. And the rest of that 3 former 1sts, 1 former 2nd, 2 seconds and whatever else for Bob and Ekblad. Hell no
3- Dermott + assets for a 2nd. That seems bad.

All of this seems bad.

You missed the Bobrovsky CBO, the Leafs would get Ekblad to buyout Bobrovsky cause Florida doesn't have the $$$ to buy him out.

Oh I got it. But if I am buying out Bobrovski Flordia is sweetening the pot. You want me to pay him 40-50million to not play for you. I will take Ekblad and a 1st and a few prospects. And sure they can take Gauthier and Johnsson and a 4th back. Maybe. But why are we giving up any more assets. It makes no sense.

Leafs gave up a 1st for 1 year of buyout of Marleau. Yes that affects the cap, and slightly different circumstances sure, but to think the leafs have to sweeten the deal to buyout Bob is asinine.

Yeah CapFriendly folk seem to think spending $60M for a guy not to play hockey is no big deal... 😃
