Flat Cap and No CBO Bruins Edition Revision 1

Created by: Hockyluv21
Initial Creation Date: Apr 23, 2020
Published: Apr 23, 2020 at 11:28
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Team Explanation
Updated with no Joe Thornton. One of the worst 4th lines in the league (statistically) last year gets upgraded with a play-driver and elite PKer in McGinn. Studnicka makes the 23-man roster, but has to earn his job, so he is initially sent to the bench. Krug, DeBrusk, and Grzelcyk agree to 2 year deals so that they can get their payday when the cap goes up again.

I don't see why Boston would have Studnicka up, only to have him ride the bench. If he's up, he's playing in the top 9. If he's not quite ready for the NHL, he probably goes back to the AHL playing 1st line minutes. There is more benefit to him playing 20+ a night in the AHL than sitting on the bench in the NHL.

If he makes the roster, its on the second or third line.

Good Contracts, , but the bruins 4th line wasnt bad statistically. They were actually pretty good, (Kuraly had 23 points in 64 games or something), (the bruins dont need McGinn, BUT I wont argue it because its a fun concept and I like him as a player)

The Lines need work though

Stud has to play ON the roster (or they would just leave him in the AHL to develop, which isnt happening)
The third line is ALL Power Forwards, so while its a big bad bruins line, its not gonna be that effective.

Overall: Not Bad!! Good contracts, ok Lines, whatever Trade!

Bruins won't have 3.3M in cap space after signing Krug, DB and Grizz. Just not happening.

I like McGinn, nice idea. I just think the Bruins are deep at fourth line. Guys like Gaunce, Senyshen, B Ritchie, Lindholm, Kuhlman, Hughes and Frederic are all capable. McGinn seems like a luxury.

Griz and Debrusk will probably get bridge deals (as they do here) so yes, they can sign him! And have plenty of money!

So why bridge DB and/or Grizz when you have 3.3M (in this case)?

Good deals for DeBrusk, Bjork, Chara. If Grzelcyk takes that. Krug won't sign a two-year deal, even with a flat cap. Highly unlikely.

Vladar will probably sign a two-year deal and that's if he's ready to be the backup. Focused on NHL roster so that's why you're missing Zboril and Senyshyn I guess.

Already told you what I think of getting McGinn so

And Studnicka, if he makes the team, he plays. Otherwise, he's in the AHL.

I'm struggling with Grzelcyk's next deal. He's not better then Carlo, the cap will probably be flat or a roleback of some sort. How can it be justified to give Grizz more then Carlo especially if he is bridged?

As a Canes fan, I can attest that McGinn is one of the better 4th liners in hockey because of his PK metrics. He'd be a good piece to have, especially at 50% retained. If the preference of the FO is to promote Studnicka to the top-6, though, I do get that he would be a luxury piece.

I'm not sure what kind of deal the Bruins want to do with Grzelcyk.

He signed his 2Y ELC, became regular second year. Then he signed a two-year, $1,4M deal (bridge deal?) that ends this year. He's 26. If he signs another two-year deal, he'll be UFA at the end of it. I know cap is probably staying flat and Bruins don't have much space but I would try to with a long-term deal, personally.

He already signed a bridge deal two years ago.

I think one of them should get a full deal, but idk man, everyone else (including the experts) believe they will both be bridge deals

True, he did already sign a bridge. I like Grizz, I can appreciate what he brings but it is limited. Best case scenario he's a Jared Spurgeon only left handed. There is a huge premium on RH D. There are also so many 5' nothing LD (this coming from a 5' nothing athlete). He hasn't done enough to differentiate himself. Even with Krug we are trying to figure out how to justify keeping him at a reasonable number and he is an elite PP guy.

Grizz within in the term of his next contract (2-4 years) he will have to fend off Zboril, Lauzon, Vaak, Achan, Zech, Moore plus who knows who else. In my mind anything over $3m seems like a mistake.

Well, he's certainly worth more than $3M. Part of the reason " it is limited ", he plays on the third pair behind Chara and Krug on the LD. Also, on the second unit on special teams. But when given a top4 role, he plays like a top4 guy.

That could benefit the Bruins and they could use that to sign him for less but Grzelcyk can also use that against them. We'll see.

Like bhavikp27 already reminded me of is that Grizz already took a bridge. He's super smart, fits with McAvoy pretty well, he needs to show more offense in my mind. I just can't see SweeNeely keeping $3m+ on the sidelines.

If DB got a Konecny contract, 4x4.5 and Grizz a K Miller 4x2.5 one I'd be happy.

He is indeed buried behind those two. He needs more offensive numbers to get that big contract. Look how long Krug had to wait with his contracts, sign a second bridge, bet on himself and he was getting lots of PP time and had great playoff runs. Grizz isn't getting those numbers, opportunities and has guys breathing down his neck and a possible multiple year flat cap. He's in tough, on another team he could get a pretty big contract, in Boston he's too far down the depth chart.

I really think you need to sign and trade Gryz. (If Krug signs). If not he will get picked up by Seattle and we will get no return. Boston will have to protect Mac, Carlo and Krug. No protection for Gryz
