Spending on the blueline

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 22, 2020
Published: Apr. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Canucks are comfortable moving forward with Demko as their long-term starter then they should let Markstrom walk, sign a good 1B for 1 year, and spend money on improving the D core. I know VAN needs to improve on the defensive side of the puck, but Krug is just flat out good everywhere on the ice. If Hughes is comfortable on his off-side they would make a crazy good pair.

Krug isn't signing in Vancouver. And no, Krug is not " good everywhere ". He's elite offensively and okay defensively. Carlo, opposite so that's why they're so good together. If you pair him with Hughes, lethal in o-zone, problematic in d-zone probably. And as I said, he won't sign in VAN.

krug has his heart set on returning to boston. If vancouver wants to upgrade their LD there are more realistic options availible

my guess is probably 7.5-8.5M at least, not that surprised if 9. Don't forget about Pettersson too, possibly 9-10M to add to that salary hit.

First off you need to realize that we'll probably have a flat cap this year and next year, So if Vancouver did sign Krug but they wont because he doesn't want to play in Canada plus he wants $8 million+ to play anywhere but Boston. There will be noway that Vancouver could afford to resign both Quin Hughes and Pettersson both combined would exceed over $18 million per so not happening for several reasons.

I do realize Krug is a long shot to sign in Van. But there are no future cap issues with this signing.
Next year there's over 9.5 mill of basically dead weight coming off the books (Sutter, Baertschi, Benn, Spooner buyout), plus I doubt Edler or Pearson will be back, freeing up another 9.75. That gives the team most of the room to sign both Petey and Hughes to long term deals, even if there's a flat cap.
Or they could bridge either/both players for anywhere from 1 to 4 years. There's another 9 mill in bad money coming off the books in 2022 (Beagle, Roussel, Luongo recapture fees) with hopefully at least a small bump in the cap. A 3 year bridge for Hughes would line up nicely with the end of Myers' deal. Lots of ways to get it done.

A.N.Y. - I like Tanev/Mark out the door!
* Their ages will not mesh w/ the core shift going to the kids in QH/EP40

Additionally, Van needs to address more than just a "Loui CBO."
* There's good UFA money coming off the books thankfully (incl. Sven B, Sutt, Benn)
* Best trade pieces are: Sutter, Ferland and Beagle and trades IMO are a must even for 5/6/7th rd type picks - just "monetize them" somehow.

Case in point of looming trouble = US$6M on the 4th line above in two players and US$4.375M Sutter scratched is fuuuugggggly....

* Do the work now and next year can get QH/EP40 signed long-term. Otherwise, Hugo/EP may have to do bridges...

Yep to all of that, but I'm curious if they could get anything for guys like Sutter, Ferland, Beagle, etc. from teams that those players would accept a trade to. It's more likely VAN would need to sweeten a deal and pay to get rid of their contracts, though I really hope Ferly can get healthy because I think he can be a nice contributor.

As for bridge deals, I'm on the fence as to whether they're all that bad. Yes, If you get a guy signed long term early you'll likely get really good value at the back end of the contract. But if you do a bridge deal that still retains their RFA rights at the end of it (ie. 3 year), you have that many more potential years of the player with the franchise if they sign long term after that.

Sutter (+/- $$ retention by Van) has value to me as a Centre traded to a contender at TDL for late pick or B-prospect, if Van is not in a long run scenario too.
Ferland - yeah if he gets healthy or he'll likely be LTIR for the season.
Beagle - dump for anything late rd 6th-7th...
Krug will be BOS or DET I think...

That said, could be enough $$ in the system for the two-kids but that has to be looked at further....
* Agree on bridges, COVID 2.0 could hit and more turmoil happen so not being locked in to deep is a sound GM move.

VAN will re-sign Markstrom first.

1) Why?
2) $$ / Term?
3) Expansion = protect Mark or Demko?
______________________________________________________________________________________
from Tues post:
Ahhhh, Markstrom's more in the "UNDER-WHELMING" class than "Under-rated."
from NHL.com Career Numbers:
GP___ GS___ W____ L____ OT__ SA____ GA__ GAA___ Sv%__ SO__ MIN__
272__ 256__ 110__ 118__ 32__ 8,056__ 720__ 2.80__ .911__ 5__ 15,409__

Yes, he's a late bloomer so that's in his favour and perhaps the best is yet to come (ie: Tim Thomas 2.0)!?
But I doubt it...

Demko has 37 career games played there will be far better goalies who are more established for Seattle to take. Markstrom is literally the MVP of the Canucks. Benning has been patient with Markstrom and now he is finally a legitimate starter he is not planning on just letting sign with another team.

If you think so, OK.

Vegas selected 3-goalies in the NHL draft. Additionally, they could select players (G-men included) if they know another team covets said player (think 3-way type of deal).
Demko's going to get what next year 25-30 games and could increase his stock exponentially.

I'd be interested to see your list of G-men ahead of TD...
Cheers

I do hope he comes back. He's been great the last two years and it would allow the team at least one more season before deciding who to protect out of him or Demko.... which leads me to his contract.

I've been signing him in different ACGM's for 4 yrs x 5.5m, which I think is reasonable. But I think the team could probably get him a bit cheaper if they lay out different options based on term;
2 yr= 6 AAV
3 yr= 5.5 "
4 yr= 5 "
5 yr= 4.5 "

It would be interesting to see what Markstrom would go for out of these options, but at his age it makes sense to factor in age-regression the longer a deal runs.

If I'm JB, I sign Markstrom to the term/$-values you quote above ^ ^ ^ ONLY IF - he agrees to be exposed at expansion.
Thoughts?...

I agree. I hope Ferly can come back healthy and well because i have always been a fan. As for bridge deals, yes they are nice, the only problem i have with them is say you sign an RFA (no specific name just example) to a 3 yr 6 m per year bridge deal. All fine and dandy, until his contract is up and hes worth 9 m or something like that. Long term maybe he would have signed for 7 or 7.5, .but now you end up paying more per year long term

I think Hugo/EP long term already starts w/ a "9". Or if you prefer, collectively they are US$20M for the pair.

Markstrom has only played a career total of 270 games. He hasn't had any big injuries in his career so far. I don't see his game falling apart that fast. Goalies can still play at a very high level even in their late 30s. Jim Benning is not going to just let Markstrom leave after years of being patient and developing him to be a number 1. Demko has played a career total of 37 games, there will be far better and more established goalies for Seattle to take.

It will be interesting on how contenders will deal with the expansion draft. It will be hard to trade bad contracts. And as much as i like Toffoli, canucks should let him go. They need the cap and they already have Jake, who is proving to be the player that he was?drafted to be
