Deangelo >>>>>>>> Parayko. Here they are with their d partners.

Drop the picks and Rangers still reject. Though interesting trade is Trouba for Parayko.

I think they are completely different player no? One is better offense and one is complete shutdown guy.

That’s one season bro, also the one that happens to be Parayko’s worst and Deangelo’s best. Parayko has been significantly better the rest of his career.

Parayko’s averaged 2.5 WAR a season for his career and hadn’t been below 2 until this season, Deangelo hasn’t even reached 2.5 wins in his entire career. Parayko 5v5 defensive impacts are also top-2/3 in the league the last few seasons in EW and Micah’s model. Parayko sucked the first few months of this season, but other than that I don’t think it’s close. Deangelo’s still great though.

Deangelo leads Parayko in WAR/60 over the past 2 seasons. (he's at 3.3 over the past 2 years).

,,,,and pretty much the best offensive transition dman in the game:

Screen-Shot-2020-04-28-at-1-26-40-AM

I think in terms of value Deangelo is slightly more valuable because

a) Studies show that Defensive play in your own zone (where Parayko most excels) is more closely tied to coaching scheme and structure (the more repeatable individual defensive component is blue line breakups - though that is also affected by certain coaching schemes). Whereas offensive performance and transitions are largely independent of coaching schemes and strategy, they tend to be consistent regardless of environment, making them inherently more valuable. Thus a player with league average offense and exceptional defense is going to be ultimately less valuable than the opposite.

b) Age and Team control. Deangelo is 2 years younger, and can be resigned now as an RFA to a deal with a LOT of term whereas Parayko walks in 2 seasons.

I think Parayko is an awesome player, don't get me wrong. But I put Deangelo up there with the best, especially considering his offensive performance with an anchor like Staal and one of the worst defensive coaching schemes in all of hockey (need to look no further than Pionk or Shattenkirk's massive improvement this season for tangible evidence of that)

Since DeAngelo and Parayko have the same controllable years till UFA (depending on DeAngelo's new contract), gotta think the Rangers lose on the trade due to the picks going to the Blues

You looked at 1 season, and that wasn’t even a full season so it’s tarnished. You have to take into account that Parayko is playing better quality lines than Deangelo is.

I guess it comes down to what you value, but Parayko getting the best defensive RAPM results over a large sample against the competition profile that he plays while not taking any penalties is more valuable and rare. Knowing what I know about NHL gm’s as well (not that they understand how to evaluate defenseman) I’d be shocked if any one of them is taking Deangelo over Parayko.
