2020-2021 flat cap no CBO best case scenario

Created by: gregb569
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 27, 2020
Published: Apr. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Angello - Qualifying offer
Lafferty - 2 year deal - $100k raise to be 13th/14th F
Miletic - Qualifying offer
McCann - Similar to TORs deals w/ Kap/Jo/Kerfoot - took the highest + longest 4yr @ 3.5M
Simon - ZAR deal give or take a few hundred thousand.
Riikola - Qualifying offer
Jarry - Similar to Merzlikins deal (Merz has slightly better #'s but we're signing Jarry for longer) 4yr @ 4M

UFA - Reunite Chris & Brandon. Very very solid & steady 2 way (more defensive) Dman who can play on any line for PIT. ***** To the people saying he's overpaid, maybe. He's going to be playing 18+ mins a night easily on this team, especially considering injuries, he'll be more likely to end up around the 20 mins a night mark *****
Marleau - Takes whatever the league min is to stay in PIT to chase a ring.
Sheary - While I at some points have hated Sheary, he fits in here, has great chemistry with the remaining guys from his cup run & has good speed. Takes a bit of discount because he most likely won't have suitors lined up out the door for him after his subpar year.

I think all trades are fair. Let me know what you guys think!

***** LTIR are all guys who could potentially challenge for a small role next year.. Any opinions on who is the closest to contributing? *****

Also, this gives us $5.5M next year to sign Marino, Teddy & ZAR which should be doable (hopeful for a cap raise as well.)

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
This trade is essentially - Johnson + Rodrigues + 4th + Bjugstad return from TDL for their 3rd. IMO a fair deal, one that OTT comes out ahead in value and PIT gets necessary cap relief.
OTT
  1. Bjugstad, Nick
  2. Johnson, Jack
  3. Rodrigues, Evan [RFA Rights]
  4. 2020 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Bjugstad - Can play in the top 6/9 and be flipped at the TDL for depending on his play - most likely a 3rd or 4th.
Johnson - Play the veteran DFD role, helps them hit the cap floor - also Seattle expansion bait
Rodrigues - Young, fast bottom 6 forward for cheap

PIT
  1. MacDermid, Kurtis
  2. 2020 5th round pick (LAK)

I would take the under on the Jarry/Sheary/McCann contracts. I think one of the college kids--I'll say Reilly on a whim--might help in some way next year. We need a couple nice surprises next year. PO Joseph is probably still a year or two away.

I don't hate the $ for Tanev, we could use a really good bottom pair RHD, but he's already regressing, I wouldn't give him more than 2 years, Jarry probably gets more $ (closer to 5) or less term for the same $ ZAR deal worked bc he had just taken a step up, Simon has been good in the league for a few years now, he's more proven in the league, he probably gets like 500k more. That seems like a bit much for Murray, but idk, also if possible I'd much rather keep ERod and move/let go of Sheary

In terms of chance to contribute I'd say
Miletic
Lee
O'Connor
Rielly
Hallander

Angello
Poulin

POJ

Legare

I'd be happy to see Sheary move on. I don't think he adds a lot and would much rather see Marleau in the lineup. Don't like Simon a whole lot either. Would like to see Poulin get a shot to contribute. If the choice is between Murray or Jarry, I expect GMJR to pick Murray unless he prices himself out of that conversation.
I think your deals make sense with the possible exception of the oilers deal. I just don't see getting a 1st round pick for Murray. As a Pens fan, I'd be for it but would be shocked by it.

I think the Jarry + McCann deals are most accurate IMO.
Sheary I agree with solely because I honestly don't know if he'll be back next year... but on the flip side we did just trade back for him so I'd say there's a slightly higher chance he's on the team next year than not.

I think Reilly has the best shot as contributing - not the best player or most ready - but he plays a position of need for us. 3rd line RHD.

Reason I would think lower for Jarry is Merzlikins got $4M and Jarry's season wasn't as good.
McCann's slump for the last 6 -8 weeks I think will cost him...you never know though...
I wouldn't mind Sheary coming back for $2M, but i's prefer a legit top-6 wing option...
