I think the most likely scenario for the 2020 NHL playoff format would include 24 teams, and the top-8 would get a bye-week while the other 16 play a best-of-__.
In this case the matchups would be:
CBJ-TOR---}Winner(plays)BOS
PIT-MTL---}Winner(plays)PHI
NYR-CAR---}Winner(plays)TBL
NYI-FLA---}Winner(plays)WSH
WPG-CGY---}Winner(plays)COL
EDM-CHI---}Winner(plays)DAL
ARI-NSH---}Winner(plays)STL
VAN-MIN---}Winner(plays)VGK
Who would you take in the theoretical "round of 24"?
Whoever wins that round will move on to the "round of 16".
My guess is that the round of 24 will be run in best-of-3 manner. If that's the case, I assume the results would look something like this
Eastern
TOR wins 2-1 against CBJ
PIT wins 2-0 against MTL
CAR wins 2-0 against NYR
FLA wins 2-1 against NYI
Western
CGY wins 2-1 against WPG
CHI wins 2-1 against EDM
ARI wins 2-1 against NSH
VAN wins 2-0 against MIN
That would mean the actual playoff pairs would be, assumedly in a best-of-7 manner:
TOR-BOS (once again lmao)
PIT-PHI (expecting a total chaos)
CAR-TB (seems interesting)
FLA-WSH (potentially a total blowout)
CGY-COL (repeat from last year, don't see any change coming result-wise)
CHI-DAL (seems interesting)
ARI-STL (another potential blowout)
VAN-VGK (seems also quite interesting)
