Flat Cap 1 no Penalty CBO

Created by: CHUG
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2020
Published: Apr. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pens Needs/Wants Next Year
1. Schultz Replacement
2. Top 6 RW
3. Cap Space
4. Bottom Pair LHD
5. Plan for Goalies
6. Get rid of JJ contract

These two moves and one signing address all of the Pens needs and make them deep at every position with a little cap space to work with at the deadline. And you can look to have Seattle take Horny in the expansion draft to make some cap space for Marino next year.

====================================================================================================

The LA deal I think is exactly the kind of deal the pens need to make this summer, getting a cheap third pairing defenseman with size and a bit of a mean streak (Gudbranson, but cheap).

====================================================================================================

Montour fills the third pairing RHD that you lose in Schultz that can eat minutes, move the puck and put up some points and keep Marino sheltered or be moved to third pair if Marino outplays him.

====================================================================================================

One of Murray or Jarry had to go, Murray has the pedigree and you can sign Jarry for cheaper which will be important next year. He give buffalo a true number 1 something they have needed for a long time, Bjugstad also fills a need for the sabres next year (big RW or 3C) and the Sabres have a ton of cap space next year so taking both players shouldn't be to tough. The value of that trade may be a little off, but that's an easy fix (just adjust the draft pick exchange).

====================================================================================================

Craig Smith fills the scoring top six winger need for the pens and has a proven scoring touch, but can also play up and down the lineup if he needs to.

====================================================================================================

Then for depth there are 2 NHL capable forwards and defensemen not in the starting lineup when injuries happen. The power-play units are both stacked and the penalty kill is fast and plays with an edge.

Smith and Simon likely get a bit more, I don't mind the Montour trade, but I wouldn't like to give him that much $ or term (even tho I'm sure he'll get it) and Marino is a FAR FAR FAR FAR better hockey player than Montour

I think MacDermid costs more maybe throw in Riikola. @Bf3351 told me he’s an excellent defender, though his stats aren’t very good. Montour’s stats aren’t very good but he is a young puck moving defenseman which fits the team. I’d look at getting Miller & the pick or trade Murray for Jokiharju & deal Bjugstad elsewhere for a 6th.

Yeah any of those Murray deals would work, just need a 2nd or 3rd pairing RHD and they have too many so wouldn't cost as much from them. As for MacDermid I would be willing to add a little for his size and cheap contract

I don’t think we need Montour. If we’re gonna trade a goalie it should either be for a first+ or a top 6 winger

Who is going to replace Schultz then? We need someone. The most I'm paying Schultz is 2.5 after this year and I don't think he takes that. And goalies don't have nearly as much value on the trade market as players, would be very difficult to get a top six forward for Murray

TVR is perfect replacement and I disagree with that. Murray can bring in a top 6 forward but I wouldn’t trade him

I think Murray is worth more than a 3rd pair D but I'm a huge fan of Smith.

Your also getting a higher second round pick and dumping Bjugstad who has 0 value on the trade market.

Where do you find the money to sign him then?

Pens really aren’t in a cap crunch. CBO Johnson, trade Jugs, and we’re fine

Bro, I love ur dedication on here .... (True insane Hockey Fan, like me)

BUT u De-value Bjugstad too much!!

He is still a good player that has good analytics & had some terrible bad luck w/ shooting % end of last yr. But he is still a 26-27 yr old 6'-6" - 215-220lbs - Top 6 RW to #3C & #2C on limited teams.
- But has had bad luck w/ injuries & is in a contract yr.

Marino is already a better player than Schultz ever was.

As for MacDermid, LA has defensive holes and they just resigned him. They aren't trading him.
The Murray trade, I wouldn't trade Murray for a 4 million 3rd pairing guy. That's a bad move. Letang and Marino are your top 2 RD.

Sub Montour for McCabe. We solved the 2nd pair RD with Marino so the biggest ? is 3rd pair RD. McCabe running 3rd pair LD so he ca solve many problems on the bottom pairing.

Bad time to have both things going on. He is destined for OTT.

I apologize for the delay, I've been suspended lol. It's hard to say what MacDermid costs realistically, hes been undervalued and considered just a goon for so long, but now Blake and the Kings are starting to see hes a lot more than that. If I was Kings GM I would have tried to sign him 1M for 8 years lol but that's just me. I don't really have an answer yet, we'll hopefully know more by the end of next season. He is my 2nd favorite defenseman on the Kings and I hope we never trade him.
