Realistic goals for Colorado

Created by: milehigh11
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2020
Published: Apr. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Line 4 would all be UFAs at the end of the year. For a chance a few of the younger players to get their feet wet. We would have 8.5 million in cap space during the year to make any trades for injuries that happen.

After the season another 19.77 million comes off the cap add in our leftover we have around 28 million with only Capt Landy and Makar to resign and maybe Grubaur but so far Franky has outplayed him and is signed cheaply. Also have RFA Timmins to resign but it will be cheap bridge to prove his worth. I see Landy signing a team friendly deal around 8 million for 5-6 years. Makar hopefully takes MacKinnons lead and takes a little less to build a power team that can compete every year for a 'ship. 7 or 8 year deal at 7-8 million would be fantastic . So that is roughly 18 million for those 3. we would have 10 million left over to get another goalie and defender

Anaheim has no use for another LH defenseman

Anaheim needs either a RHD or scorer. So if you want to change that 😀👍🏻

If Jost, Zadorov and Compfer are available, I see a lot of teams knocking on the door as those are good young players.

He does have ties to Michigan and he is a solid player but he isn't worth a 2nd at least not to Detroit.

Anaheim have no need for LHD, rather, they need a young RHD (Timmins). Anaheim fans agree that Timmins + 1st would be a fair return for Rakell. I also don't see Sakic trading away TWO 1st rounders for two seasons of a player. He's never traded a 1st and so that idea is really unlikely.

I like your Compher idea in theory, though I think it's unlikely that BOTH Jost and Compher get moved at the same time. Maybe one gets moved this offseason and one in 2021 when Bowers and Newhook will be ready. Detroit have 9 2nd and 3rds the next two drafts so they definitely do have the currency to go after players like Compher if they want to.

Not sure Anaheim will part with Rakell with what you're offering. Though, that offer might intrigue other teams for a player of similar caliber

Timmins was the main piece of interest back in the Timmins+1st for Rakell trades, not the first, especially when ANA doesn't need in any way the two players coming with it

While it's true that we don't need yet another LD, I can see us making that trade if we could flip Zadorov to Florida (in the same way that Boston flipped Martin Jones to San Jose) for MacKenzie Weegar and a pick. You could leave Jost out of the deal (add Drew Helleson instead) and make the 2021 third a conditional second if Rakell scores more than 50 points.

Is this what you mean?

1) Zadorov for Weegar + 3rd

2) Weegar + Helleson + 1st + conditional 3rd/2nd for Rakell

No, sorry if I was unclear. I'm an Anaheim fan, so that's who "we" refers to. Anaheim sends Rakell to Colorado for Zadorov, Hellesen and the Avalanche 2020 first (fat chance), and then Anaheim turns around and sends Zadorov on to Florida for MacKenzie Weegar and a third or fourth. Colorado ends up with a better player than they'd likely get at #29 (David Pastrnak notwithstanding) -- and who will step in immediately -- for two years and one who's likely to renew with a Cup-contending team, which Anaheim won't be for a couple of years. Florida gets an upgrade from MacKenzie Weegar to Nikita Zadorov. And the Ducks get another very late first-round pick that they might be able to package with their own second or the Boston first to move up to the Islanders' first rounder.

The chance of that parlay coming home is the same as my winning the Kentucky Derby exacta.

Thanks for clarifying. Just for clarity I spelled it out:

Anaheim gets: Weegar, Helleson (#47 2019), 2020 1st (#29), FL 3rd/4th
Anaheim loses: Rakell

Colorado gets: Rakell
Colorado loses: Zadorov, Helleson, and 2020 1st (#29)

Florida gets: Zadorov
Florida loses: Weegar, 3rd/4th

I think from Colorado and Florida's perspective it's a pretty easy trade to make. Though the package has good assets, Colorado would't really be giving up a key piece they were planning on using on their roster anytime soon. Zadorov is getting traded for futures regardless; and Helleson and the 1st are both a few years away. Helleson is currently only Colorado's 3rd best D prospect (behind Byram, Timmins, and arguably even Zhuravlyov), so they wouldn't be giving up much.

From Anaheim's perspective I don't think they are getting the key piece, or top prospect that they could get. Instead of this trade I think they'd rather use Rakell to pick up ONE really high-end prospect (or a higher 1st rounder than #29), rather than diluting the return by mixing a middling RHD like Weegar and mid-round pick into the return and settling for a former 2nd round pick instead of a 1st round level prospect.

I'm glad -- thrilled, actually -- that you think both Florida and Colorado would be happy with this scenario.

As an Anaheim guy, this result would be hugely gratifying for me. Weegar is an important piece -- we would now have three actual NHL defensemen on the right side (with Manson and Gudbranson); he would be an excellent bridge for the next two seasons and into the future as the right side got better (presumably, with one or more of the 2020 draftees). The #29 is a means to an end, not the end itself. My dream for Anaheim is that the Ducks end up with any two of Drysdale, Schneider, Grans and Niemela and I think we need more than the #31 and #36 picks to achieve that, especially if we don't choose Drysdale at the top. Maybe I'll do a Ducks team with this pipe dream.

Lol, you've got the same RHD targets Colorado has with the #29 pick. Now I see why you want that pick so much!

Pretty sure that if Schneider is still sitting there by the time Avs are up at #29 then they're gonna take him. Niemelä should be there at your #31 and #36 picks though, as might Justin Barron.

If you're aiming for defensemen you should be happy with the 31 and 36 picks because 25-40 is definitely the sweet spot for where you can get value on defensemen in this draft. There's not many D's high in the draft but there should be a tonne of good D's falling into the early 2nd after all the high end forwards have gone in the 1st (eg. Schneider, Guhle, Grans, Niemela, Barron, Wallinder, Poirier, Cormier, Cotton, etc).
