1 compliance buyout - flat cap - worst case

Created by: DripBayless
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 29, 2020
Published: Apr. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Although Neal is a more productive player than Russell, he's also got 3 years remaining on his contract which is riskier. However, I do believe there is a team out there who would trade a 3rd rounder for a perennial 20 goal scorer. But this is a worst case scenario Oilers team who should still be able to make the cap in these circumstances.

Other cost cutting moves: Trade Benning's rights (saves 2M), Trade Russell's contract with 50% retained to any team (saves 2M), Trade Khaira's contract (saves 1.2M). And you're probably replacing these guys with Benson (850K) or Lagesson (900K) who's already on the roster, Bouchard (900K).

Sounds like Holland wants to get some picks back if Jesse doesn't change his mind. Had a productive year in Finland. I believe NHLe was 40 pts?

Detroit declines it too much for Puljujärvi he hasn't done anything at the NHL level to warrant a 2nd round pick.

Mike Smith might be 500K too rich. But with the year he was having, there's no way you're getting him for 2.5M. I'd like the base to be 2.5M with another bonus laden contract but I think he's got a little bit more leverage than the Oilers do. There's no good goaltender in UFA who can be had at >4M and we don't have any coming up so yea, with the year he was having and with other goalies, I think he's got some muscle to flex.

Lol. He was well below average this year. He got lots of wins because of run support, not due to great goaltending. Among the 45 goalies to play in at least 30 games, Smith's save percentage ranked 36th. His .902 was well below average for an NHL goalie and he was wildly inconsistent.

He's 38 years old and trending downward, this is not a good signing at all.

Fair points. Any suggestions on who can replace him adequately for less than 3M?

Smith’s value is also in his puck moving on ES and PK and the guys have outright said that that makes their lives easier. So again, let him walk, and I think you’re creating a massive hole on the ice and in the locker room. It’s well documented he’s valued in that room as a leader as well. If he walks, I could see it having a bigger effect on the locker room than when they let Matt Hendricks go.

There are a few guys who would bring better on-ice performance than Smith, and several of them are UFA's this summer. It's anybody's guess what they'll cost, of course, but some guys in the price range are Khudobin, Halak and Greiss. Even Dell would be a better option. Goalies will shake loose in several cities: New York, Pittsburgh and Arizona, for instance.

As far as I can see there's a glut of goalie talent available this summer, and with extra cap pressure this year I don't expect significant raises for most of them.
