You've got Yamamoto on the 4th line... Do you watch any Oilers games? I like the Hoffman signing but he'll probably want 5 or 6 years. And I'm not sure that gets us Johnsson.

Yeah the Hoff probably wants closer to 5 x 6.5 doubt 3 x 6 gets her done. Noway i see him signing that cheaply he'd probably stay in Florida if that's all he got.

I dont watch more than 5 or 6 Oilers games a year... but I would draw up the top 9 lines

    Hoffman McD Yams
    Johnsson Drai AA/Kassian
    Soda Nuge AA/Kassian

Regardless this would be a killer off season for the oilers

Oops I have been rearranging this for days. Going back and forth with Keeping Benning and resigning Ellis over the trade of Johnsson.
No I havnt watched an Oilers game since 1981 and I keep buying Loge tickets.

If I put Nuge on the 3rd line than I wouldn't sign Soderberg, I would sign Namestnikov instead. I think the future should be to roll the centers out like you said, but right Now until a few more cheap wingers develop in our system it has to be 2 strong lines instead of 3 water downed lines.

Hoff would be a nice addition for sure, Soderberg too. I say skip Johnsson (8 goals while playing 75% of the time with Matthews and Nylander is terrible, practically any pylon should be able to do that. And his contract is way too high too, he's basically a cap dump) and put Benson in instead, then you'll be able to afford a backup goalie. I don't think Koskinen can play all 82 by himself!

I agree. Two top-10 lines in the league is what you have here, that's Cup Contender material for sure. A Benson - Soderberg - Athanasiou 3rd line (or Nygard on LW if you want more speed) would likely outscore the competition too. If Tippett can teach Athanasiou to back check competently, he'll be a great easy minutes 3rd liner: in his career he's scored an average of 23 goals per 82 games. That's a nice player for the 3rd line.

Girgensens might be a good addition for the 3rd line LW, as he has some defensive bonafides. Vesey is another guy who might come cheap and brings a physical presence to the line. Both guys are better and cheaper than Johnsson, and they wouldn't cost any assets to acquire.

I'm not sure anyone will give Hoffman a 5- or 6-year contract. At least, they shouldn't. Hoffman will be 31 a month into the season, paying top dollar for what will clearly be "decline" years is a fools game. Every GM that has tried it has been burned. Every single one. Only elite players can maintain great production into their 30's: Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Kane, etc. Even these players see a decline, but the decline is more gradual for them. Hoffman isn't in this category.

Edit: I'm not saying that some desperate GM won't give Hoffman a 5-or 6-year deal, just that it's guaranteed to not end well.

I do really like Vessy. Not sure if he will come here. We were in the running for him at the start of his career. He decided against us. Do you think Ennius and Benning on this team instead of Johnson.

Yes, I think Ennis and Benning have more value to the Oilers. And if you can't find room on the roster for Benning, he can be traded for a pick and/or prospect.
