I think you get more than a fourth along with Erikkson Ek. He's solid, but Dermott and Kerfoot combined are worth a lot more than him.

Yeah I kinda published this and realized that I goofed on that one for sure. Either way, I don’t tend to count picks overly much and focus more on the players.

Solid idea though with that kind of trade. Definitely clears cap for a guy like Demelo.

Nah. I think a fourth is good enough.

The Leafs overpay in all these trades...

Calgary would have to retain half on Bennett for the Leafs to even think about doing this trade. Maybe Bennett half retained and a 3rd round pick for Johnsson.

Dermott is severely undervalued. I'd keep him for at least another season to boost his value.

Engvall is just straight up better than Jaros.

Demelo is probably looking for 3.5M for 3 years. For some reason people are really high on him on this site. He's similar to Justin Holl... not worth over 4M...

Johnsson has a lower stock because of his injury history.

I admitted I kinda goofed with the Minnesota trade but JEE is younger and has more room to grow.

Jaros also has room to grow and is cheaper.

Dermott is not affordable and doesn’t help out because he has trouble on the right and is being pushed down in the depth chart.

I agree that people tend to undervalue Dermott. The guy was a highly rated first-round pick that's had a solid start to his career. Even though his production wasn't great this year he was put in a difficult position with the injuries on the back end and with a ton of D-partners. A lot of teams would love to have his rights and he could be a solid player. I'd be happy to keep him unless we find a good trade.

Why are we selling low on all the guys that were injured last year? That's terrible asset management.

Johnsson was injured and still almost doubled the number of points Bennett got this season... Engvall is better than Bennett and Bennett is paid twice as much.

Engvall is younger than Jaros. Jaros' is a 3rd pairing/7th D man. Dermott would be much better... even on his wrong side.

The sum of these 2 trades is basically trading Johnsson for Jaros and a million in cap space.

Yes Ok, but I need to cut cap as well. You can’t afford to hold onto Dermott and Johnsson if you want a top pairing D guy. Engvall is also expendable at the end of the day based on his performance since he got his contract. Again, Johnsson is very injury prone, but as I state in all my posts, I usually say balance it with picks because I don’t normally value picks properly. Back to the Bennett trade, you’re swapping 3rd liners while getting cap space to play with. Bennett could possibly benefit from a new change of scenery and brings a bit of grit to the team as well. Jaros is a 6/7 guy, which is fine because he’s playing on the 3rd line there and is a RHD, which is also more affordable to have unlike Dermott who will push for about 2M roughy, which is too much. Dermott also struggles on the Right side, so I would rather get a guy who is comfortable where he is for cheaper

Dermott "struggling" is better than Jaros at his best. I can see Dermott taking a cheap 1 year deal (1.5M) to boost his value for his next contract.

Bennett is not a 3rd line player. The only reason why he's still on the roster is because he was a 4th overall draft pick. If he was a 7th round pick like Johnsson he'd still be in the AHL. He's about as good as Dennis Malgin except he's getting paid 2.55M.

At best Bennett bounces back and becomes a decent bottom 6 guy. At worst you're stuck with a healthy scratch getting paid 2.55M.

I’ll take the chance. I’m still saving cap in this scenario. He’s basically the Cody Ceci here because he’s not locked down long term, but helps with the cap scenario by being a player I can slot in

Okay if you really want Bennett without retention then the pick would have to be a 2nd round pick.

Makes sense but I doubt that happens. Regardless, Johnsson probably doesn’t warrant a 2nd in all reality, or he does, which then means that you don’t get the second and Bennett.

Bennett is worth almost nothing. The Flames will be happy to get rid of his contract.

i mean this is better than what most leaf fans value our players. A guy named mitchmarnerelite feels kapenan is worth mayfield and marner is worth savard. That guy may really need to rethink his values.

here is how i would fix this. I would trade johnsson to dallas for a 2nd. Change the 4th pick to a 3rd in the minnesota trade then add something like (dubas extends him 2.75 for 4 years or something), other than that not bad

Jesus those trades are Brutal. Marner is a “generational” (I’ll use that lightly), playmaker, and is only worth Savard? I’m shook.

Yeah, I’ve been waiting for you to comment, so seem to have the best eye imo for what’s going on (I tend to have trouble with picks, but we all know this)

lul i aint even the best to ask, there are way better leaf fans than me who can give honest advice. Still thanks. Overall I like where the roster is going and hopefully dubas considers something like this

Its mainly because I like seeing peoples ideas of how to make this team better. I believe they are on the verge of greatness and once they fix their d-core they will go to the cup finals and win. Its like what happened with washington, always beat by the penguins, till one year they finally beat them then go to the finals and win the cup. Put boston in the penguins shoes and that's my cup story.

In general some leaf ideas are good, some are bad, but overall I will mostly be there to let that person know what is good, what is bad, and how it can be fixed.
