TBL Trade from tornadoty11

Created by: CD282
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 30, 2020
Published: Apr. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Based on this AGM: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/324470

This is the Oilers side. Same parameters apply: flat cap + 1 CBO.

The OTT trade is something suggested in The Athletic: the Sens are on the hook for $615k of dead money for Gaborik, while Russell is paid just $885k more in the final year of his deal. So Ottawa gets a veteran shutdown D who will improve their PK for not much more than league minimum. Edmonton can put Gaborik on LTIR, nullifying his cap hit while clearing space on their blueline. Win-win.

Note: I'm aware that Benning's QO is $2M, but I'm thinking that he'll trade some AAV for term, especially since Bouchard will be pushing for his job this fall. I hope Ennis feels the same way about trading AAV for term, because he's a good fit for the team IMO.

I don't see Ottawa doing that. As you point out, Gaborik is owed less money than Russell, and conveys a larger cap hit, which gets them closer to the floor.

With the Sens likely re-signing Mark Borowiecki, and with Artyom Zub's contract being made official any minute, the Sens would have a full 7 D core (Chabot-Zaitsev Wolanin-Zub Borowiecki-Brannstrom Reilly).

If Ottawa wanted to replace Reilly with Russell as the 7th D, I could see that, but I don't see him bumping anyone out of the top 6. I certainly wouldn't want Ottawa to give anything up to do it though.

To play on top line with McDavid or 2nd line with Draisaitl is a good reason to waive your NTC. Granted his NTC is only 11 teams, he has to submit a list of 20 teams he would be traded to so maybe Edmonton is on there regardless.

I get the financial aspect making some sort of sense from the OTT/EDM perspective, but OTT giving up a pick doesn't make sense. OTT is doing EDM a favor here and the pick should be going the other way. Gaborik counts more against the cap, and Ottawa is full of guys that play for little cash and can do PK work (Reilly and Boro). A trade that makes more sense is a Reilly for Russel trade after the signing bonus gets paid. Both do similar things on the ice, but Reilly has a higher salary and lower cap hit.

I wouldn’t be surprised if every canadien team was on it

Disagree. Russell would be a positive addition to the Sens blueline - both teams get better as a result of this trade.

Borowieki is a UFA this summer, he's not on the roster. And Mike Rielly doesn't PK.

And Edmonton has no interest in Reilly as he's another LHD. The whole reason to move Russell is due to the glut of defensemen on the Oilers roster.

Even still, he could waive it for a specific team if asked. You never know. With the 1LW position open in Edmonton, it's an attractive destination for a guy like Killorn. Especially if the Lightning fall short again this spring/summer.
