Moving forward- Kapanen for Roy

Created by: Leafsmania
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2020
Published: May 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs move Kapanen for Roy. Roy can play in top 4 and is cheap this year. Kings get speed and can use Kapanen in top 6. Leafs get a 3rd round for CBO's Carter. Both players under team control going forward.

Leafs sign Brassard to help in 3rd line center. Weber as some security on back end.

Leafs can squeeze Dermott and Mikheyev

If cap goes to 8.25 million as rumoured, they have more room. If stays at 81.5, can stay under with 3 scratches. Can upgrade at the deadline with some accrued cap space.

if you sent kerfoot to la you could open up more cap space, he can be replaced by someone like robertson.

Robertson aint nhl ready yet. As for this trade if LA switches carter for brown and retains half leafs will consider and throw johnsson in. The reason for the retained salary is lefs will play brown

Kings really like Roy. It’ll take a hefty offer to pry him away. 7th round steal at this point.

I like kapanen but I think Roy is more valuable to the kings than Kappy

I was thinking of a trade involving something similar except the leafs add johnsson and dermott take brown with half salary retained. Kings get rid of one of their old guys and gain 3 young depth players.

You make assumptions here! Since the Nhl is on hold Kerfoot couldn’t be moved.

What the difference you assume that he will be moved to LA to make more space under the cap when the Nhl is on Hold. You are contradicting yourself again.

buyouts and salary bonuses usually have specific time-frames to happen, this trade doesn't.

I don’t like the idea of trading Roy right now. I think brown is going to remain a king. Kings need veterans to help the young kids. I do like kappy Incase one of the prospects don’t pan out, which could very well be the case. But I think Kings are better off keeping Roy Right now

If there's a CBO available, why wouldn't the Kings just buy out Carter instead of sending him to Toronto for a 3rd?

I think that LA would rather have Kapanen as he is younger and under team control when his next contract comes up.
Plus the versatility Kerfoot brings makes him more valuable for Leafs.

Good point. I think because the Kings are already paying Kovalchuk, Phaneuf and Richards $ they may be hesitant to pay a fourth player the same.

I think it positions of strength. LA has Doughty and Sean Walker as solid options on the right. Leafs have nylander and marner on the right.
When you look at the Kings, you do not see much forward depth. A ton of great prospects, but I think LA would want some more players with experience that can grow with the team.

But, if you think LA would want more, what else would make it worthwhile?

I honestly don’t know. I do know the kings like him A LOT and were very impressed with him. I believe he was the only defender to have a positive +/- with 18 in 70 games played, which says something about him on a kings team that didn’t do so well defensively. He just turned 25 in March and I believe will stay with the kings for the next few years, on a cheap deal, at least unless they get an offer that they can’t say no to.
