Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mikko Lehtonen (1 Year / $925,000 AAV)

Was this a good signing?

You understand that handedness doesn't dictate position right? All of Dermott, Lehtonen, and Sandin have played RD.

So has Reilly and look how that worked out... it's a thing.

In which hockey book proves building a team with Euro's/Russian talent wins the Cup >?

Detroit had a lot of Euros when they won their cups, but they had Yzerman, Leafs have Matthews:/

Wow, the Leafs got even better ...

Now watch them lose to Boston.

Nice job Dubas!

He's bad at signing star players but you gotta give it to him that he's good at getting these foreign players.

I mean he signed all his star players... Signing them on the cheap maybe.

Dubas has a blue print and is sticking to it. Pay your stars and keep them and be creative bringing in bottom guys to fill the gaps.

He payed his stars and then added 1M dollars. If he signed his star RFAs at the same prices as other GMs (Rantanen 9.25M compared to Marner 10.9M) he'd definitely be a top 5 GM in the league. As it stands I consider him to be slightly above average but not Masai level for sure.

Great pick up for the leafs I just don't know if he will fit in. I would have loved to see him sign with the jets. He would have got a lot more ice time.

I´m not sure if this is the type of defenseman the Leafs need. They are really offensive-minded team with big defensive issues, so they sign another offensive-minded defenseman! Makes a (Leafs) sense!tears of joy unsure

Wait so if there is playoffs this year, can't he not play in them? I believe he can play in the regular season though, but I don't know.

I would definitely agree with that assessment.

Marner is the only one I really consider an overpay though. Matthews and Nylander's deals look pretty spot on.

From the CBA notes on CF above:
"Unrestricted free agents signed after the trade deadline are eligible to play during the regular season, but ineligible to play during the playoffs".

Nylander's deal is fine but Matthews is also an overpay for the term he got. 11.6M for 5 years when McDavid got 12.5M for 8 years. If you adjust for the number of years that's basically a 13M for 8 years.

Matthews should have got more term yes, but he is earning his number in my opinion. He has proven to be one of the top goal scorers in the NHL.
I'm not sweating Matthews getting paid that much

Matthews' contract is basically the reason we overpaid Marner. Dubas should have signed Marner first...

True. I think the biggest mistake was actually not recognizing who their core was earlier..

In hindsight, they should have just blown them away with long-term deals at good cap hits (at the time). Similar to the way teams have signed Keller and Hischier.
Signed July 1st the year before they became RFA's

Nylander = 7.5m x 8
Marner = 8.5m x 6
Matthews = 11m x 6

Lmao more lefties to play right D. Lets all continue to pretend handness doesn't matter because it is working out so well.

I agree completely. Dubas signed all the guys at basically their peak value. If they signed Marner a year earlier they could have gotten him at 9.5Mx8 easily.

Weird choice as he'll likely be playing behind Rielly and Muzzin

he is probs gonna play on the right side of muzzin as I did see him play pretty well on the right side in the SHL and liga in 2016-2018

Meh. I can understand this deal from Leafs' perspective, but I don't get why Lehtonen chose Toronto. Not exactly a contender, logjam in his own position, likely pretty low ice time coming...

but he can play the right side as he has before quite often so their right side is wide open for him.

He can, although he's better at LD.
