Josh Anderson trade

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2020
Published: May 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Anderson is an RFA this offseason and becomes an UFA in 2021, so a 1 year 'prove it' deal (or arbitration) simply doesn't make sense for Columbus as that walks him to UFA and Columbus would then lose him for nothing. A multi-year deal seems unlikely due to the injury history as well as the lingering bad blood from previous contract negotiations.

Needless to say it makes sense for Columbus to trade Anderson this offseason, even though the 'rental' tag and injury history will keep his price reasonably low. As a buy-low trade target, Anderson fits the type of player Sakic has recently tended to go after (eg. Burakovsky and Nichuskin).

As a return for Anderson, a young prospect/roster player + a reasonably good pick seems like fair value for given that Anderson is essentially a rental coming off an injury ravaged season. Jost did well after the deadline when he got top 6 minutes and PP1 time due to injuries, and so a non-contender like Columbus will probably see a potentially good fit. On his own Jost probably fetches a 2nd + 3rd, so I figure that Jost + 3rd would be a bit high (that would be equivalent to 2nd + 3rd + 3rd for Anderson), but offsetting that 3rd by sending back a 4th or 5th would bring it in line with fair value (i.e. 2nd + 3rd + difference between COL 3rd and CBJ 4th, or COL 3rd and CBJ 5th).

Anderson is probably looking at a 1 year $2m contract after the season he just had, but going up to $3m to buy an UFA year in case he breaks out makes sense. He'd probably be happy to resign in Colorado given that he would be getting an opportunity in the top 6 on a cup favourite on a line centered by Kadri/Newhook.

Expansion Protection (7+3+1):
Mackinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Kadri, Burakovsky, Anderson, Donskoi
Makar, Girard, Graves (Johnson waives NMC)
Exposed: Compher, Nichuskin, Johnson, Francouz (pay Seattle a pick to not select Johnson).

Why? What would need to be in the trade to make it work?

Going from a 4th to a third is not worth downgrading from Anderson to Jost. I know they've both had their up and downs but at least we know Anderson can be a capable top 6 guy. I think Josts ceiling makes out as Anderson level anyways. Also I completely disagree with you saying it doesnt make sense for us to keep him, we have no obligation to trade him. We can extend him at the end of the year and if not, then at least we can let him play next year to build up trade value

As you say Anderson's value could indeed go up if he has a good start to the season next year, thereby increasing his trade value at the deadline. Conversely, if he has another season like this one then he will hold almost no value.

Even if he has a good season next year his value at the deadline as a rental likely won't be too far off what he can fetch already this offseason, so Columbus are better off moving him now rather than risking having him lose even more value if he doesn't have a good season.

As for the return, I did mention in the comments that it could be a 4th or 5th coming back. Do you think upgrading from 5th to 3rd would be enough? Keep in mind that you're getting a 22 year old NHL'er who is cost-controlled for another 4 years compared to Anderson who isn't cost controlled beyond next season and also coming off a serious injury.

There is definite Tyson Jost hate on this site. Remember the kid just turned 22, was rushed by the COL into the NHL when in all honestly he should have played another year at UND. He has flashed his skill and excellence in spurts including the playoffs, but imo he needs consistent middle 6 time not a carousel of positions and line mates up and down the line up. He has the skill set to be a solid 40 pt forward who contributes on special teams.

Why do you insist hes leaving? Not every UFA leaves columbus. Hes said in like 2 athletic articles that he really hopes he can extend here. You mention that CBJ has to trade him since hes a UFA but say he'd happily sign in colorado? What makes you think that?
Plus, let's say he doesnt bounce back and his value is even lower at the TDL. It's worth the risk. Him bouncing back is the one thing we need most next season. Not another bottom 6 guy, not a slight downgrade in picks. We need Anderson to bounce back. We will have the space and roster spot for him if he can

And no, upgrading from a 5th to 3rd is hardly better than a 4th to 3rd. I've never been high on jost, I really think at most hes going to be a meh 3C, and I would be shocked if he ever reached the level Anderson was at for 3 seasons before 19-20. If you want Anderson then you have to overpay big time, because we have no obligation to move him until the TDL at least.

Also, I saw you say we should since we are non-contendors. We are in a playoff spot right now.

@richard88 solid write up. The only thing I would say is your short expansion list bit, the Avs should just accept they are going to lose 1 player and notary cute. There are likely going to be guys like Skjei and Montour probably available so I don’t see Seattle being interested in EJ’s contract or him if the Avs get him to waive his NMC.

Even if he turns into a solid 40 or forward (which I think is his absolute ceiling) then I'd still take a chance with Anderson. CBJ needs 2016-2019 anderson back. Not another decent third liner.

I dont hate Jost, I just think hes a high floor low ceiling kind of guy, and I dont think he turns into anything too special. Josh, on the other hand, has been a game changer for us until this past season due to injury. 2016-2019 Anderson is a much better player than Jost

I can respect that take. Honestly I think Jost turns into a low 50 pt guy with someone like Seattle where he gets top 6 minutes and regular power play time none of which he will ever get in Colorado. If I were a lottery team looking for a 2C I’d see how Colorado was willing to sell.

Kamenev isnt really worth much at this point but keep zadorov and trade cole, the 2nd and 3rd arent worth much to a team who's contending now

If im columbus, i throw out last season as it was a major shoulder injury filled season. i take a look at his previous couple years and offer him a decent term deal. something like 3ish million over 4 years. its the type of deal that either looks great for the team in a couple years or you kind of just move on from.
