Taking a stab at it

Description
3C remains a question/weakness, but overall team speed and potential transition game are improved. I'm concerned with bringing back Smith, but I don't think Holland can afford an upgrade this season, and he will want to maintain the leadership presence Smith brings. As it is, Smith will want a raise but Holland will try to hold him to the same terms as last season. Green gets two years on a team friendly contract, sheltering Bouchard and opening the opportunity to trade Larsson by the deadline, move up Bear and Green, and slot Bouchard/Jones on the bottom right side. Gags gets a courtesy contract so he can end his playing career where he started it, and he does provide some depth and versatility. Benson and Marody are the first forward prospects on the call-up list; the defensive prospects are even deeper this season.

Montreal doesn't want Jujhar. Especially considering Montreal is giving up a 3rd round pick.

You don't like the trade, fair enough.

I opted for Montreal because they have tiny forwards and Washington's 2020 3rd round pick is practically a 4th round pick. It seems reasonable to suggest the 81st overall pick, is probably a pretty inexpensive cost to acquire a 25 year-old depth player who has already played 218 NHL games. The odds of the prospect selected with the 81st overall pick playing 200 NHL games are less than 15%. If Bergeron doesn't want a big, youngish depth forward (4C is perhaps his most effective role) who is a particularly good penalty killer, willing to defend team mates, and playing under an inexpensive and expiring contract there is quite likely another GM who is.

That deal would not fit with what I was trying to accomplish. I can't spend the future to take on salary.

I toyed with suggesting a trade with Colorado, with picks coming back in return. Then I realized that buying out Neal and trading Chiasson could very much decimate Edmonton's power play. Both of those guys provide the essential net-front presence on the PP, and if both are gone, Kassian seems to be the only similar option remaining.

What would you pay for Kerfoot? He is still a 50 pt player with good two-way game, and he's only 25.

If he's scratched he's not much help on the PP either tho

I’d like to see the Oilers sign Bear for 3 or 4 years for less, but a fair amount. Then he’ll still be an RFA, and they can re-up having a better idea of what Bouchard is gonna be.

There are a number of considerations behind the roster I propose. Trading Russell for Grabner, and signing Athanasiou, Ennis, and even Gagner provides Tippett with quite a bit of versatility in his group of forwards. If Haas can't manage the 3C, there is enough flexibility to move guys up and down the roster to allow someone else to fill the 3C on spot duty. In the meantime, having Green in the lineup gives Holland a bit of freedom to consider trading Larsson, who is entering the final year of his contract. Bear might be able to play alongside Klefbom, Green or Jones beside Nurse, and the bottom pair could be any combination of Lagesson, Jones, Green and Bouchard. Moving Larsson out should net Edmonton a quality top 6 forward, or perhaps a solid 3C +.

I mean no slight against Kerfoot, but he would not be my first choice. My preference would be to pursue a right-handed 3C with some size and the ability to provide a net-front presence on the power play. From that unicorn, I would next consider a strong right-handed face-off winning machine, capable of at least 35 points/season, strong penalty killing acumen would be a bonus. Kerfoot might fit into the third tier of trade targets.

He's scratched, but he remains available and can fit into the roster as the coach deems necessary. If he's traded, he is not available.

Fair enough. I'm sure we'll get 2 thirds from someone for him.

Its going to be a roll of the dice, no matter which way his agent and Holland agree to go. He could turn out to be a fairly compensated 3-4 d-man, an over-paid 5-6 guy, or a fringe #2 d-man on a team friendly contract.

Agree, that should be a very attractive price for a 50-point player.
