Nylander for Pesce and Geekie

Maybe. Nylander, Dermott, and Jonhsson or maybe even Kapanen for Pesce and Nido 30% retained.

Geekie is a 21 year old NHL ready winger who had great numbers in the AHL, hes a pretty good prospect

Ya he was a legend in those 2 games. Problem is that Toronto has great winger depth and Korshkov, Malgin, Brooks (C but could play wing) are all almost NHL ready. They need defensemen and a guy to replace Nylander, not more prospects. Their window has opened and they need to maximize.

So you get Pesce and Geekie, save 3 mill, fill 2 spots, trade Johnsson. Now you just opened up 7 mill to sign someone in free angncy

It's that 3m cap difference that makes Carolina say no. Absolutely no way Johnsson is worth a second without retention or dap coming back to Leafs/

Not bad at all but would rather take back a cheaper roster player like Nido

Here's where I disagree with so many. So many teams are close to the cap...they want to get rid of cap players like Johnsson so they can fill other teams. Oilers can probably sign a UFA for Johnsson's price or get a better deal from another team\.
Lets's say the Leafs want to sign a UFA, a position of need for 3.4m, but they need the cap. Doesn't really matter what the return is for Johnsson the exchange of Johnsson for let's say DeMelo suits the Leafs needs. But there are going to be so many other teams in the position of the Leafs.
So whether it's a 3rd or 7th., the Leafs don't any trade leverage.

Well the idea is that Nido replaces Kapanen. If Nido has 30% retained putting his AAV at 3.5m~ then you are halfing the price of Nylander. Nido also just had a career low year and this is the perfect example of buying low, while trading for Geekie would be the perfect example of buying high. Don't get me wrong, Geekie is a great prospect with tons of upside, but he is just a little too young and as Toronto already has a good prospect pool with a few stars and given Geekie is a year or 2 out and so are SDA, Abramov, Robertson it just doesn't make sense to trade for him.

These are both important players for their team; I can't see either of them getting traded.
