Can this team compete for a playoff spot

Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2020
Published: May 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Going to give this speculation of a great Devils offseason another shot, I realized that my last attempt was not great and needed work so hopefully this can be a better attempt I put some thought into it because I love doing this stuff and I am a really big Devils fan, also super bored no school or work I have nothing to do lol. Hopefully I did a decent job. However I still do believe it is time to start making moves, we aren't going to get better of we just keep having poor seasons and lower the moral and kill the attitude and confidence in our young players, we have a foundation set and it is time we get some winning seasons under these young players belts to help build confidence and ultimately make them better players. Also tried to leave some money for next year to resign Palmieri and Gusev. Cap will likely go up, we will have Bozak and Zajac off the books or just at a much cheaper price and we will still have money in 2 years for the big offseason resigning Hughes, Ty Smith, Butcher, Kapanen and Zacha, even Subban but at a cheaper contract he seems to like it here and I like having him here. Thats another reason Id rather give Blackwood 3 years so we do not have to deal with all of this in one offseason.

I am all for signing Bratt long term, it has some risk, but after being scratched I feel his a changed man and he is a foundational piece for this team going forward and it would be cheaper to just lock him up now and he is at the point where he is young enough to where some team would take a chance on him and also at a reasonable cap.

As for next season as well I see Butcher and Subban having better years especially Subban I think he will be better, not saying he will be the Subban the wins a Norris Trophy but he defiantly should play better and I feel he will same with Butcher I think he will be better. And I expect Bratt to erupt next year I think he is going to go off.

  1. 2020 1st round pick (VAN)
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
Not sure if this is close or not, but this would allow STL to resign their captain and we also fix a very big problem in getting a reliable defender to play top line minutes, him and Subban would work very well together. Id be willing to give more if we needed to.
2.
NJD
NYR
  1. Schneider, Cory
Additional Details:
CBO
3.
TOR
  1. Severson, Damon
Additional Details:
Not sure if this gets it done but we get a big upgrade at RW which we need in the worst way possible, also Severson was not phenomenal last season not a bad idea to upgrade at RW with him.
4.
NJD
  1. Montour, Brandon [RFA Rights]
BUF
  1. Maltsev, Mikhail
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Buffalo only has like 8 players under contract next season, they need to sign a lot of players and some are due for nice raises, and they have a pretty deep defense with Risto Dahlin Jokiharju McCabe and Miller, montour is expandable and he can fill the shoes of Damon.Again, not sure if it is enough but I would also ebe willing to add once again because we get better.

Sure this team could be somewhat competitive but it's dependant on Hughes and Hischier both turning into 70+ point players. Without that, not a chance. Also Wood should be on the 4th line not 2nd.

Just my opinion, but I think Dunn's age 24-32 seasons are going to be more impactful than Petro's age 31-38 seasons so even though Petro is the most important player to the Blues right now, I wouldn't move Dunn to keep him around. You never know exactly how players will decline, but they always decline. And Dunn still has room to grow and can take a bigger role than he's been given.

Still no forward depth, no legit ppg player, defence doesnt have one elite player (Dunn does help quite a bit but I dont think St Louis does that deal) and Blackwood is good but young and wouldn't be able to carry a team.

They are minimum 3 years away from competing for a wild card spot. All up hill from here, takes time though.

Blackwood has shown this season that he's fully capable to carry a team. Now, I'm not saying that he'll do that from now on and that his play after the Hall trade is his new standard but he definitely is able to pull off the perfomance required to do so.

Buffalo can't do that, they gave up a 1st round pick and a really good prospect for Montour just over a year ago. The only way they move him is for a proven #2 C to lock in behind Eichel.

He did play well this season but with younger goalies its after the 50 games played mark that they start to tire out. This season cut short sucks because you have to wait to see how he handles 55-60 games in a full season. I think he is the least of the worries I listed though.

we need retention on severson because we have no cap space. I think its hard to say whether they make it. If hischier and Hughes live up to #1 pick status and are lights out all year, and PK finds his game a bit, then they have a chance, but in the east and specifically the metro it'll be tough
