Sergachev Trade

Created by: Vector_Cereal

Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2020
Published: May 10, 2020

Description
No CBO for Abby or Nielsen - if teams get a CBO I don't think Tampa needs to trade. Similarly, if Tampa dumps cap (i.e. Johnson) I don't think they need to trade an RFA.

Additional Details:
As a Wings fan I've found the low ball offers for Sergachev embarrassing. He's a legitimate #2 D on a contender and would command a top-10 pick in a straight-up trade.
Tampa gets two cheap, young players that fit on their PP2, and the 32nd OA pick (i.e. a late first). Half of Fabbri's cap hit is retained.
Tampa's Defense lineup:
Hedman - Cernak
McDonagh - Foote/Shattenkirk
Cholowski - Coburn

I think its perfect. DET maybe gets the player who's a bit better but Tampa still gets a top young right shot d man who doesn't cost much, and its not like DET desperately needs their cap space

Hronek for Sergachev would be perfect for Tampa, yes. But I don't see why Detroit would just gift Tampa an equivalent player and solve their cap jam for them. Given Tampa's cap situation I think they'd have to throw in Alnefelt - I doubt to many GMs are willing to let Tampa escape this crunch without sacrificing something.

Any other skaters you like on Detroit? It's hard to find many players on good value deals who would make Tampa's roster. I could throw in one of the early 3rd round picks (top 70) to this, but I figured picks aren't of much use during your competitive window.

Neither team makes this trade 1 for 1 the needle leans a bit toward Detroit. But it makes a lot more sense for TB since they need cap space and with the defensemen they have they can loose Sergachev and still be really good. Hronek is currently Detroit's only 2 way dman and their best dman. Now TB isn't trading Sergachev and Detroit isn't trading Hronek.

I actually think a deal like that would benefit both sides- Tampa is thinner at RHD, DET is thinner at LHD for the future as they have seider coming up at RHD

Ok but Seider what a full season to half a season away from the NHL and he is more of a defensive dman he doesn't have the offensive upside that Hronek. Just about every scouting report I've read on Seider all say he isn't going to put up a lot of points but he can make plays. It does benefit TB a lot more than it benefits Detroit. Sergachev had 10g 24a for a total of 34 points in 70 games. Hronek had 9g 22a for 31 points in 65 games. Nobody has scored more goals than TB has so far this season with 234 goals and nobody has scored less goals than Detroit with 142 goals. At least to me that makes Hronek 31 points more impressive he has a point on over 20% of Detroit's goals. I wouldn't trade Hronek in this this situation.

Hronek is also DET's top D man, sergachev is the 2nd or 3rd option on Tampa which does have a big impact, so I think sergachev's totals are at least just as impressive given that he doesn't get the same opportunities. I'm also taking sergachev over hronek in my own end

This a lowball offer for Sergachev lol

For context, I've been seeing trades like Cholowski + a 3rd for Sergachev. What needs to be considered is a competitive team with cap space like Wpg can offer sheet him for 8.4M and only give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Tampa can't match that while retaining Cirelli and Cernak, and the picks they get back are all likely late in each round. I would say my offer gives quite a bit more than that.
The 32nd pick is essentially a late first. Fabbri is a former 1st round pick with a couple years term at a 1.5M cap hit and a 50 pt pace scorer on the lowest scoring team - he's worth a 1st to Tampa. And Cholowski is another former 1st on a very cheap deal who is very capable of playing a 3rd pair/pp2 role on a team like Tampa who can give him O-zone starts and a capable D partner - he's worth a 2nd to Tampa.

Your logic is completely flawed. Sergachev is a top pair Dman under 25 (under 22 lol). You should take a look at what top pair Dmen go for in the NHL these days...this isn't even remotely close to realistic value

Take a minute to look at Tampa's cap situation, adjust yourself to reality, then come back. They will lose either lose Sergachev for less than what I proposed or they match an offer sheet and lose Cirelli. If there's a CBO or they move Johnson out then it becomes a different situation. But Sergachev for 2 players who improve Tampa's roster and the 32nd OA pick vs. A late 1st, 2nd, and 3rd is an easy choice.
Once you begin to grasp the reality of their cap situation it becomes clear that they won't get full value on any player they decide to move.

You mean like when a 22 year old Dougie Hamilton (former 9th OA pick) got traded from a cap tight team after a 42 point (and 48 point pace) season for a 1st (15th) and 2 2nds (45th and 52nd). Or when a 25 year old Jacob Trouba (former 9th OA pick) got traded from a cap tight team after a 50 point season for a 1st (20th) and Neal Pionk. Sergachev (former 9th OA pick) is on a cap tight team, will be 22 when this trade would happen, and just came off a 40 point pace season. You have any better comparisons of real trades?
Now ask yourself if Tampa - a cap tight team in their competitive window - would rather only get picks or a cheap, young, 50 point pace forward, a cheap, young, bottom pair D with 2nd pair potential, and a 32nd OA pick. Those contracts alone come with a huge premium for Tampa, as we saw at the trade deadline in the Coleman and Goodrow trades.

lol try the most recent Hamilton trade...that's the value. TB isn't gonna settle on value because theyre cap-strapped. They will move contracts necessary to keep their stars. That's how it works.

Bottom line, that trade for Serg is almost as absurd as anything else I've seen here. A deal for Serg starts with Hronek or next year's 1st.

You asked me to look for a comparable and I provided almost exactly the same scenario with 22 year old Hamilton. Now you're saying the trade for a 25 year old Hamilton is a better comparable? Buddy I'm not the one with flawed logic here. I'd think you were a troll, but seeing your GM team where you used Fabbri and the SJS pick to trade back for MTL's, it's obvious you're just uninformed.
See the rest of the comments for the Hronek for Sergachev trade - when you include Hronek's contract premium he holds about the same trade value as Sergachev.

Your entire argument depends on you ignoring the first Hamilton trade, which is the best comparison available. Why didn't Boston move out contracts to keep their young star? I thought you said "that's how it works"? Yet in light of evidence proving you wrong you don't change your argument; it's pretty clear you're delusional and have no grasp of how the NHL works. At 22, Hamilton was a better d prospect than Sergachev and had a higher trade value, yet he was traded for about the same value that I offered. The fact that Hronek for Sergachev 1for1 is also a fair value trade doesn't change that what I proposed is also fair value. Would you recommend I trade Fabbri to move back in the draft?

lol it was a trade to move up in the draft, dipsh*t...the season wasnt over yet it was just a placeholder.

Boston moved what they felt was necessary, which was Hamilton, and took the best offer. They have Carlo and McAvoy on the right side so he was expendable. Ever heard of context much? Bottom line, that trade for Serg is laughable, like the rest of them. Fabbri doesn't have much value and Cholo is like any of their D prospects they already have. In no way, shape, or form is that remotely close for a 22 year old top pairing Dman in the NHL. TB will move out Killorn or Johnson or whoever else to make room for Serg.

Try checking the standings before making a team otherwise you look like a fool.

Carlo and McAvoy weren't even drafted when they made that trade; how's that for context?

Fabbri is a 24 year old who was on pace for a 50 point season in his Wings games. While playing on the lowest scoring team in the league, his scoring rate would rank 6th best among Tampa forwards. Combine that with a 2 year $1.5M effective cap hit from the trade and he absolutely has first round pick value for Tampa. They gave up a first for Goodrow largely because of his cap friendly deal.

You can try to rationalize it anyway you'd like. Not even close for Serg
